The constituency of Gera I (constituency 41) is a state electoral district in Thuringia . The constituency includes the northern part of the independent city of Gera with the districts of Aga , Cretzschwitz , Ernsee , Frankenthal , Hain , Hermsdorf , Milbitz , Roben , Röpsen , Rubitz , Scheubengrobsdorf , Söllmnitz , Thieschitz , Trebnitz and Windischenbernsdorf . In the last state election, 42,961 residents were entitled to vote, of which 20,816 voted. This corresponds to a turnout of 48.5%.

The city of Gera is traditionally fiercely contested between the CDU and the PDS / Left, with a tendency towards the left especially in the last state elections.

Unlike in 2009, Birgit Diezel, who was the incumbent president of the state parliament at the time of the election, did not win a mandate on the CDU state list this time and thus left the Thuringian state parliament.

Birgit Diezel had already lost the constituency of Gera II , which she had represented in the state parliament from 1994 to 2004, to the PDS candidate.

There was an incident during the 2009 election in the Frankenthal district (constituency 048): As it became apparent about 90 minutes after the start of the election, ballot papers for the Gera II constituency had inadvertently been handed out at the polling station. As a result, 47 votes that had previously been cast on the wrong ballot papers had to be declared completely invalid. This had no impact on the outcome of the election.

In 2004 the PDS won five of the 44 Thuringian constituencies (including both in the city of Gera), all others went to the CDU. Bernd Koob was the only constituency applicant for the CDU who could not move into the state parliament from a list.
