Water polo

At the XXV. At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona , a water polo competition was held. The venue was the Montjuïc swimming pool in the south of the Olympic Park on Montjuïc .

competition

The six best-placed teams in the 1991 World Cup were directly qualified for the Olympic tournament (Yugoslavia, Spain, Hungary, USA, Italy, Germany). Spain was the host, which is why the seventh-placed Soviet Union moved up (represented by the United Team the following year). The remaining five starting places were awarded from May 2 to May 10, 1992 at a qualifying tournament in Calgary ; Cuba, Australia, Greece, France and the Netherlands qualified.

After the UN Security Council decided on sanctions against Yugoslavia on May 30, 1992 due to its involvement in the Bosnian War , the Yugoslav world championship team was expelled two days before the start of the tournament and replaced by Czechoslovakia (sixth place in the qualifying tournament).

The two best teams from both preliminary round groups advanced to the semi-finals. The third and fourth ranked teams played a round for places 5 to 8, the fifth and sixth ranked teams a round for places 9 to 12 (direct encounters in the preliminary round also counted for the final result).
