Wendell Brown is an American computer scientist , entrepreneur, and inventor best known for his innovations in telecommunications and Internet technology, cybersecurity, smartphone app development, and the Internet of Things . Brown has founded several well-known technology companies including Averon, Teleo, LiveOps, and eVoice. He is the CEO of Averon.

Entrepreneur

Brown is widely recognized as a pioneer in the leasing and work-at-home industries for the virtual workforce, who co-founded LiveOps in 2002 as chairman and chief technology officer. LiveOps designs call center solutions and provides social media management for companies like Coca-Cola , Pizza Hut and eBay . As of July 2016, LiveOps had the largest home-based call agent workforce in the world with more than 20,000 employees, and its cloud platform processed more than a billion minutes of customer service interactions.

In 2015, Brown founded the cybersecurity company Averon, which develops seamless identity solutions based on mobile technologies. Averon unveiled its cybersecurity solutions concept on the main stage of the global TED conference in Vancouver, Canada in March 2016 . Telefónica has announced a technology partnership with Averon.

In 2011, Brown co-founded Nularis, a developer of high-efficiency LED lighting technology that serves global franchises such as the Hyatt hotel chain, the Four Seasons Hotels and The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf.

In 2006 he co-founded Teleo, an early competitor to Skype , where he developed VoIP applications that allow users to make and receive phone calls over the Internet. Teleo was acquired by Microsoft and in 2006 became part of Microsoft's MSN group.

As co-founder and chairman of eVoice, Brown founded the eVoice voicemail platform in 2000, the world's first major Internet-enabled voicemail system. He invented techniques like voicemail-to-email, visual voicemail, and improved caller ID. These are all innovations that are considered early "apps" and were later adopted by Google Voice and Apple . eVoice has sold voicemail solutions to AT&T , MCI , AOL and regional telephone companies. eVoice was acquired by AOL Time-Warner in 2001 and became part of the AOL Voice Services Group.

Software developer

As one of the first developers of cybersecurity software, Brown founded WalkSoftly in 1996, which brought out the first cybersecurity software for PCs. In 1997, Brown developed the innovative Guard Dog Internet security package for WalkSoftly, which was named one of the four most innovative security products of the 1990s by the Software Publishers' Association and one of the top ten best-selling security software of all time by PC Data. WalkSoftly was acquired by CyberMedia Inc. in 1997.

Brown founded Hippopotamus Software in the 1980s, one of the first software developers for the Apple Macintosh . Brown's Hippo-C C compiler was a leading software development environment for the Mac and Atari ST computer systems .

Brown is known among classic video game fans for his design and programming for some of the best-selling games for Imagic , including Star Wars for ColecoVision and Beauty and the Beast, Nova Blast and Moonsweeper for Mattels Intellivision .

In the mid-1980s, Brown developed the ADAP SoundRack system, a groundbreaking direct-to-hard disk audio recording system that replaced traditional sound processing. ADAP was used to create and edit soundtracks of Hollywood movies and TV shows, including Born July 4th , Honey, I Shrunk the Children , Die Hard , The Cosby Show , Falcon Crest, and the Beverly Hills pilot 90210 . ADAP has been used by Peter Gabriel , Fleetwood Mac , The Pointer Sisters , Mötley Crüe , David Bowie and Natalie Cole , among others . Brown used his ADAP technology and was a consultant on sound projects for The Walt Disney Company and Toshiba . He later worked as a telecommunications cryptography expert at National Semiconductor to develop hardware implementations of DS3 algorithms.

inventor

In January 2012 the World Economic Forum in Davos recognized Brown's energy efficiency inventions as a Technology Pioneer Award nominee. Brown's innovations in apps received the CTIA Smartphone Emerging Technology Award in May 2012. Brown's telecommunications technologies have been used to combine more than 1 billion minutes of phone talk time and are used in millions of voicemail accounts.

Brown has created dozens of US and international patented inventions in cybersecurity , telecommunications , cell phone apps, virtual workers, electric vehicles , LED lighting, 3D cameras , renewable fuels, and online music distribution.

In 2008, Brown invented WebDiet , a method of using cell phones to count and record food consumption to improve one's health. The WebDiet app was the first app that could count calories and automate nutrition coaching.

Life and education

Brown grew up in the city of Oneonta, New York and graduated from Oneonta High School. Brown began programming and selling personal computer systems while in school, and published his first computer article in Byte magazine . In 2013 he was honored with a plaque on the Wall of Distinction at Oneonta High School for his achievements in business and technology.

Brown graduated from Cornell University in 1982 and received a BS in electrical engineering and computer science . While at Cornell University, Brown received a Hughes Aircraft Bachelor of Science scholarship .

philanthropy

Brown's engagements include endowing a scholarship to Soka University of America ( Aliso Viejo , California ), supporting the aviation safety laboratory and library at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and privately sponsoring underprivileged students in South America .

He is a longtime member of the human rights campaign for the advancement of LGBT civil rights and global Jewish service organizations.

Private life

Brown participates as a speaker, technology juror and consultant at companies such as the Israel Conference, the World Economic Forum, TED (Conference), Google and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Hackathons, Digital Life Design Munich and DLD Tel Aviv, the Web Summit Dublin, TechCrunch , CTIA - The Wireless Association, AlwaysOn ("Networking Global Silicon Valley "), El Financiero (Bloomberg) and the Tech Talks of the MITA Institute.

Brown is a member of the advisory board of the Progressive X Award for innovation in automotive, including new fuel technologies and electric car development, advisor to the MITA Institute Venture Fund, and advisor to General8, a stereoscopic 3-D motion picture company with films such as The Amazing Spider-Man and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 .

Brown is a licensed private pilot and is actively involved in developing new aircraft, missile, and electric vehicle designs.
