history

Around 1500

In the north Saxon hill country between the cities of Oschatz , Wurzen and Grimma , there is the pond farm Wermsdorf. With 27 ponds and 350 hectares of water as well as the Wermsdorf Forest , these form a large natural area. There are also two Wettiner hunting castles in Wermsdorf , the larger of which, the baroque Hubertusburg, is the largest in Saxony. Fish farming began in the Wermsdorf ponds as early as 500 years ago . Around 1500 the manor owner Heinrich von Starschedel from Mutzschen set up several breeding ponds.

He worked as a mining captain in Schneeberg for the elector and was able to afford it financially and thus finance the construction of the pond. The ponds are already mentioned in a document dated July 13, 1502. These were given to the Saxon Elector August I in 1577 . sold. The Amtsteichwirtschaft Mutzschen was created from the 18 ponds with a total area of 341 hectares. Thus, the ponds have been state owned by the Wettins and the state of Saxony for 442 years. At that time the Horstsee with 84 hectares and its island was the largest body of water. This island gave the lake its name, as the island was named as Horst in documents. An ideal breeding ground for water birds . In addition to the Mutzschen pond farm, the electors also ran the Torgau and Moritzburg pond farms . The Mutzschen economy produced an average of 10 to 13 tons of fresh fish. A bailiff was responsible for the fish farming. Distributed among the subordinate official fishmasters and fish servants, the best possible income should be generated. The ponds were strictly divided into one-summer and two-summer carp and fish. In the case of necessary maintenance work and when fishing, compulsory workers from the surrounding villages were brought in.

From 1766

The management of the fish ponds changed from 1766 under the bailiff Petsch. This increased the yield through a new harvest cycle. The harvest was already sold on the dike, so half of the harvest has already been sold. The remaining fish were taken over by the fishmongers. The main fish were carp and other food fish, tench, pike, pikeperch, catfish, trout and perch as well as crucian carp. In 1787 the Wermsdorf ponds were given to landowners as tenants. Until 1836, people liable to pay compulsory contributions could still be used for services. From 1837 onwards, forced labor was abolished in Saxony. With industrialization and the connection to the narrow-gauge railway, there was already strong individual transport for fishing. This multi-day spectacle of fishing and direct sales created a festival atmosphere. It was fished at the Horstsee. The rush was already so high that the state gendarmerie had to ensure peace and order.

From 1947

The leasing ended in 1947, from then on it was converted into a Saxon state pond farm until 1952. In the period from 1948 to 1990, pond management was part of the VEB inland fishery in Wermsdorf and, thanks to new breeding methods, it flourished. Ponds have been renewed and new ones created. 15 new ponds were created with a water surface of 196 hectares. This includes the 95-hectare Döllnitzsee with the pre-lock. After the fall of the Wall in 1990, the pond farm was leased to a private tenant in 1992.

Wermsdorf fishing festival

In 1969, fishing was fixed for the second weekend in October. As a result, the number of visitors rose sharply and there were several thousand visitors. So fishing developed into a folk festival. At the same time, the awareness of the region and especially Wermsdorf was increased. The later production manager of the inland fishery Udo Seidlitz had this idea as early as 1954, but several years would pass before it finally happened on October 10, 1969 and the first fishing festival took place in Wermsdorf. Seidlitz outwitted the GDR party bosses with a trick and referred to the 20th anniversary of the founding of the GDR. The festival week of inland fisheries in Wermsdorf was immediately a contribution to the festival week 20 years of the GDR in Berlin . In addition to fresh fish, the now famous Wermsdorf fish soup was presented. At that time it was a feat of strength, because the necessary vegetables such as peppers , celery , horseradish , onions , tomatoes and spices were not always available in the shortage economy . In the 50 years it has grown into a folk festival with a Ferris wheel , amusement park , lottery booths, various stalls and of course fish in all varieties and specialties. Numerous snack stands offer farmer's bread , duck sausage , gingerbread , horse sausage , soft ice cream , goose legs and tarte flambée as well as all kinds of drinks.

The annual folk festival on the 2nd weekend in October is a worthwhile destination for tens of thousands of visitors. They can experience the traditional fish haul on site, which is expertly explained and explained. There is a relaxed, happy atmosphere and a relaxed atmosphere. Thanks to the careful organizers and volunteers, the festival is peaceful and smooth.

Fish queen

At a folk festival with fishing on this scale, a fish queen should of course not be missing. The idea arose during an agricultural fair in Leipzig in the 1990s and was realized with the first Queen in 1997. Since 2002, the queen has been crowned with a wandering crown. For the next two years, the fish queen will represent the Wermsdorf fishermen with her honorary office, such as the fish and forest festival in Moritzburg or at the Green Week in Berlin.
