action

The film follows a camera team that films life in a vampire shared apartment and accompanies the residents in their everyday lives. The vampires guaranteed them physical integrity for the duration of the filming. The viewer sees the entire film from the perspective of these cameramen, which gives the film the look and atmosphere of a documentary shot with a handheld camera. Four vampires live in this shared apartment, which is located in an old house in the suburbs of Wellington in New Zealand: 379-year-old Viago, an affected dandy and a cheerful person who sometimes annoys his roommates with his pedantic manner. Vladislav, 862 years old, a nobleman from the Middle Ages, with a large ego and ancient manners. Furthermore Deacon, at 183 years the youngest, is considered wild and rebellious. As a former Nazi vampire, he moved to New Zealand in 1945 due to image problems. In addition, the quiet, over 8000 year old, Nosferatu- like Petyr, who remains withdrawn most of the time in the cellar.

Occasional conflicts arise in this community, such as disputes that have not been washed for years, blood-smeared dishes, as well as problems that life as a vampire brings with it, such as dressing when there is no reflection. Although Viago, Vladislav and Deacon are each several centuries old, they look like they are in their mid-thirties. It is not easy for the trio to adapt to life in the 21st century. Deacon has a human "servant" named Jackie who runs all kinds of errands for the community and who in return is given the prospect of eternal life through a bite and the consequent becoming a vampire. For example, Jackie provides the trio with fresh supplies of victims, preferably in the form of virgins.

Jackie leads the vampires to her ex-boyfriend Nick, who is sucked out by Petyr and accidentally turned into a vampire. Several months later, Nick has mutated completely and moves into the shared apartment. He introduces his friend Stu to the others, a computer nerd who helps with various problems, brings modern technology to the vampires and is therefore not bitten by mutual agreement.

When Nick brags about his skills as a vampire during a party night, he attracts the attention of a vampire hunter, who then breaks into the vampire's quarters during the day, exposing Petyr to sunlight and killing him. Viago, Vladislav and Deacon are shaken and throw Nick out of the flat.

At a subsequent ball, the trio meets other posthuman residents of Wellington, such as zombies and witches , other vampires and Vladislav's ex-girlfriend, known as "the beast". After a fight on the ball, the four vampires and Stu encounter a troop of werewolves led by their alpha animal Anton. Stu is attacked and injured by the werewolves in an ensuing chase. However, a while later Stu appears with scars on his face and transformed into a werewolf. Eventually the vampires reconcile with the werewolves.

On the Internet Movie Database page, the weighted average rating of 7.7 out of 10 was determined from 136,692 users.

Spiegel Online praises the film as “very charming nonsense” and notes that the humorous potential of the film lies in the clash of “narrow-mindedness and morality-free eternity”. The Süddeutsche Zeitung sees the film as a "wonderfully subversive antidote to the gold-dusted vampires of mainstream cinema"

Andreas Busche from epd Film sees a “social study on the group behavior of vampires” in the 5 room kitchen coffin , since the lone vampire “does not necessarily have the reputation” of “having a high level of social competence”. The whole joke that Waititi and Clement play through in "every imaginable way, from deadly serious to highly absurd" is based on this speculative idea. Martin Gobbin from Critic.de also praises the fact that the two directors “unlike some younger contributions to the vampire film genre, deal intensively with traditional mythology”.

“5 Zimmer Küche Sarg conducts mockumentary- style empirical studies on the lives of four vampires. [...] The film is based on well-known television formats. Waititi and Clement became known with the HBO comedy series Flight of the Conchords , and 5 Room Kitchen Coffin works like a mixture of The Office and The Big Bang Theory . It is always about demonstration effects: between self-perception and perception of others and of supposedly self-evident social practices. [...] Waititi and Clement always vary the sitcom format of the flat share comedy on the basis of a reliable knowledge of vampire mythology. "

- Andreas Busche: epd film

“While the original title 'What We Do in the Shadows' - for example: What we do in the dark - aims at the mysterious, the German version emphasizes the normality of this life. […] The directors Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, who both also star, make it fun for themselves and the audience to take the bloodsucking folklore seriously. The joke of your film arises mainly from the conscientiousness that is displayed. "

- Cornelia Geissler: Frankfurter Rundschau
