Georg Wilhelm Ferdinand Amann , von Amann since 1891 , (born November 24, 1839 in Berne ; † August 13, 1928 in Berlin ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Life

origin

Wilhelm was the son of the bailiff Johann Georg Amann (1794-1852) and his wife Adelheid Charlotte, born von Jaegersfeld (1804-1885). Her sister Friederike was married to the Oldenburg Minister Johann Ludwig Mosle .

Military career

Amann attended school in Berne and the Oberrealschule in Oldenburg. On August 22, 1855, he joined the Oldenburg infantry regiment as a volunteer . He was promoted to secondary lieutenant by August 1857 and served as a battalion adjutant from May 1862 to the end of September 1864. Amann was then assigned to the Prussian War Academy in Berlin. After the beginning of the German War he returned to his regiment and took part in the Main Campaign . Amann was seriously wounded by a shot in the thigh in the battle near Werbach and was awarded the Knight of Honor 2nd Class of the House and Merit Order of Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig with Swords and the Order of the Crown, IV Class with Swords.

After the war, Amann was promoted to prime lieutenant and was briefly active in April 1867 as an orderly officer of the Grand Duke of Oldenburg. On May 1, 1867, he was ordered to serve with the General Staff and on September 25, 1867, left in this command, he was transferred to the Grenadier Regiment "King Friedrich Wilhelm IV." (1st Pomeranian) No. 2 of the Prussian Army . With the mobilization on the occasion of the war against France , Amann became leader of the 3rd company. He was wounded in the Battle of Gravelotte and received the Iron Cross, 2nd class. Amann was on September 24, 1870. Captain transported as well as company commander appointed and participated in the siege of Paris in part.

On May 17, 1872, under position à la suite , he was commanded to teach at the war school in Potsdam. This was followed by a command at the United Artillery and Engineering School from April 16, 1874 to July 3, 1876 . During this time, in June / July 1874, Amann also worked as an examiner for the Higher Military Study Commission. He then did troop service as a company commander in the 4th Posenen Infantry Regiment No. 59 . Amann was promoted to major on January 14, 1879 as director of the war school in Potsdam. On March 13, 1884, he was transferred to the 1st Thuringian Infantry Regiment No. 31 as battalion commander, and in this capacity Amann became lieutenant colonel on June 12, 1886 . As such, he was a regular staff officer in the Guard Fusilier Regiment for two years and on August 4, 1888, Amann was entrusted with the command of the grenadier regiment "Prince Carl of Prussia" (2nd Brandenburgisches) No. 12 under position à la suite . With his promotion to colonel, he was appointed regimental commander on December 17, 1888. Transferred to the cadet corps on May 20, 1889, he was appointed commander of the main cadet institute in Groß-Lichterfelde .

For his services Wilhelm II elevated him to the hereditary Prussian nobility on August 22, 1891 . In mid-September 1891 Amann was appointed commander of the cadet corps and promoted to major general on October 20, 1891 . From May 14, 1894 to June 28, 1895 he was in command of the 9th Infantry Brigade in Frankfurt (Oder) . He then commanded the 35th Division in Graudenz as Lieutenant General . On June 15, 1899, Amann was appointed governor of Thorn and in this position Amann received the character of a general of the infantry on January 27, 1900 . In approval of his resignation request, he was put up for disposal on March 22, 1902 with the statutory pension . Immediately after his departure, Wilhelm II paid tribute to him by awarding him the Grand Cross of the Order of the Red Eagle with Oak Leaves.

Death and grave

Wilhelm von Amann died in Berlin in 1928 at the age of 88 and was buried in the Old St. Matthew Cemetery in Schöneberg . The grave has not been preserved.

Amann married Emma Hegeler (* 1848) on October 8, 1868 in Oldenburg. The following children were born from the marriage:
