Willy Caron

Willy Caron (born June 15, 1934 in Venlo , † April 26, 2010 in The Hague ) was a Dutch opera singer ( tenor ).

biography

Caron grew up in a musical family and learned several musical instruments. His talent as a singer was discovered early on. In 1964 he completed his studies in acting and opera singing at the Mozarteum Conservatory in Salzburg . He completed further studies in singing at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam until 1966 . He also received private lessons from the singing teacher and professor Paula Lindberg. He achieved his international breakthrough in February 1964 after winning the International Verdi Singing Competition in Venice . At the Verviers International Singing Competition in 1965 he won second prize. One year later, in 1966, I won first prize in Brussels .

Caron sang in the course of his career as an opera singer both the lyric tenors (Pinkerton, Lenski, Singer in Der Rosenkavalier ), as well as the subject of character tenor (Schiuski) and the Buffotenors (Monostatos, Remendado). He had a ten-year engagement at the Cologne Opera . There he sang Edmondo in Manon Lescaut , Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly , the schoolmaster in The Cunning Little Fox and the shoemaker Frick in Parisian Life .

Caron also performed at the Hamburg State Opera . There he sang the role of Schiuski in Boris Godunow in Russian under the musical direction of Horst Stein and Wolfgang Sawallisch . In Hamburg he also sang the prisoner Skuratov in Leoš Janáček's opera From a House of the Dead under the direction of Rafael Kubelík . At the Hanover State Opera he also appeared as Walther von der Vogelweide in Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser .

At the Salzburg Festival from 1972 to 1976 he sang the role of Don Curzio in Le nozze di Figaro under the musical direction of Herbert von Karajan . In 1975 this production was also recorded for television and published on Unitel . At the Salzburg Easter Festival, he sang the role of Balthasar Zorn in Richard Wagner's opera Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg in 1974/1975, also under Herbert von Karajan . Caron appeared several times as Monostatos in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera Die Zauberflöte , including in Paris under Georg Solti , in Vienna under Karl Böhm and at the Flanders Festival in Ghent together with Lucia Popp under the direction of Georg Fischer .

Caron also appeared as a concert singer . In 1971 he sang the tenor part in Georg Friedrich Handel's oratorio Samson at the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde Passau in the Nibelungenhalle . Under the direction of Rafael Kubelik, he performed in the Herkulessaal in Munich as Porcus in Arthur Honegger's oratorio Johanna auf dem Scheiterpaufen together with Evelyn Lear , Christine Ostermayer and Peter Fricke .

In the Netherlands he was best known as a soloist with the Koninklijke Zangvereniging Mastreechter Staar and the Promenade Orkest, a symphony orchestra from Amsterdam . He also appeared as a soloist with the Limburgs Symfonie Orkest under the direction of André Rieu senior. Caron also became known as an operetta singer , with works by Franz Lehár , Eduard Künneke and Robert Stolz , among others . In the 1987/88 season he sang Menelaus in the Offenbach opera Die Schöne Helena in a production with the Limburgs Symfonie Orkest at performances in South Holland (including Venlo, Maastricht and Sittard ).

In 1998 he was the founder of the Willy Caron music theater and tried to make classical music accessible to a wider audience. In November 2009 he had his last public appearance as a singer.

In 1975 he received the Orde van de Gulden Humor . In 2008 he was made a Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau for his services .
