history

Main Street in Wilmington in 1914

Wilmington was founded on April 29, 1751. The town was named after Spencer Compton, 1st Earl of Wilmington , who was jointly responsible for the appointment of Benning Wentworth as governor of New Hampshire. Since the town was not settled within the five-year period, it was re-assigned on June 17, 1763 and this time called Draper , after John and Richard Draper, printers from Boston. But the settlers didn't like the name and the name Wilmington caught on. The town's first meeting took place on July 7, 1778.

Wilmington has been hit by severe storms several times. In 1818 a severe thunderstorm hit Wilmington. Several buildings were struck by lightning, but only one barn burned down. A man died in the fire. A tornado hit the town in 1822 and destroyed several buildings. Hurricane Irene also hit Wilmington in 2011. The Deerfield River burst its banks after heavy rainfall and flooded downtown Wilmington. Wilmington was one of the worst hit towns in Vermont by the hurricane. A woman died in the floods of the Deerfield River.
