Wolfgang Drechsler

Wolfgang Drechsler (born June 6, 1963 in Marburg ) is a German scientist who works in the fields of administration , innovation and political philosophy . He is Professor of Political Science at Tallinn University of Technology in Estonia , Honorary Professor at IIPP, University College London (since 2019), and Associate at the Davis Center at Harvard University (since 2017), where he is also a member of the Advisory Board.

Life

Wolfgang Drechsler is the son of the long-standing Mayor of Marburg, Hanno Drechsler . He holds degrees from Bridgewater College, the University of Virginia , Philipps University Marburg , the German University of Administrative Sciences Speyer and Corvinus University Budapest . He taught at the universities of Marburg, Gießen and Frankfurt am Main . Drechsler was a consultant at the Science Council during the reunification of Germany from 1990 to 1992, from 1989 to 1990 at the US Congress and in 1994 at the President of the Republic of Estonia .

From 1993 to 2006 he was a professor (since 1996 full professor ) for administrative and political sciences at the University of Tartu in Estonia. He has been Professor of Political Science since 2006 (since 2006; previously Professor of Technology Governance and Public Management) and one of the founding directors of the Technology Governance program at Tallinn University of Technology in Estonia . 2010–2016 he was also Vice Dean for International Relations at the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Drechsler was a visiting professor at the University of Lund , the University of Erfurt , the Central University of Finance and Economics in Beijing , the University of Malaya , the Zhejiang University in Hangzhou , the Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta , 2016 at the National Institute of Development Administration in Bangkok , 2017 at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Governance at the National University of Singapore , and from 2012 to 2014 holder of the André Molitor Chair for Reforms in Politics, Administration and International Relations ( professeur invité ) at the Université Catholique de Louvain . He was also a lecturer for the economic fundamentals of innovation at the EBS University of Economics and Law in Oestrich-Winkel (2006–2014).

With regard to public administration, Drechsler takes a political science approach. He is a critic of " New Public Management " and emphasizes the priority of effectiveness over efficiency . He is particularly interested in non-western administration, u. a. of Confucianism and the systems shaped by Islam and Buddhism . In terms of economic policy, he is particularly interested in the role of the state in economic growth and innovation. Philosophically, Drechsler, one of the last students of Hans-Georg Gadamer , is a classic hermeneutic .

Drechsler worked in various advisory activities, especially in the areas of administrative reform and innovation policy as well as e-governance, for national governments and international organizations, among others. a. OECD , Council of Europe , SIGMA, World Bank , EU ( Lisbon Strategy ; member of the Lisbon Agenda Group ), Inter-American Development Bank and United Nations ( UNDP ); Participation in national development plans, in various positions, etc. a. for Estonia, Mongolia , Kazakhstan , Peru , Brazil and Norway . He was also Vice President of the Estonian think tank “Praxis” (2000–2005).
