The 2017/18 season of the Vysschaya Hockey League is the 26th season of the second-highest Russian ice hockey division .
Changes compared to the previous year
- With HK Dynamo Balaschicha , Ariada Wolschsk , Kristall Saratow and THK Tver , four Russian clubs left the league for financial reasons.
- Gornjak Utschaly was added to the league as an expansion team.
- Metallurg Novokuznetsk received no license for the Continental Hockey League and was included in the Vysschaya Hockey League.
- The efforts of the Chinese Ice Hockey Association to strengthen the Chinese national teams with a view to the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing in 2022 continued in the summer with the establishment of two new teams for the Wysschaya Hockey League. With the farm team of KHL participant Kunlun Red Star , KRS Heilongjiang , and Tsen Tou Jilin , two Chinese teams are taking part in the game of the Wysschaja Hockey League for the first time.

As in the previous season, the league includes 26 participants - 22 Russian, two Kazakh and two Chinese teams. They each play a return match against every other participant in the league, so each team plays a total of 50 games in the main round. The 16 best-placed teams then qualified for the playoffs, in which the second division champions are played. Each team receives three points for a win after regular time, two points for a win after extra time, one point for a loss after extra time and zero points for a loss after regular time.
