Zähringen is a district of Freiburg im Breisgau in the north of the city. To the south is the Herdern district , to the west is the Brühl district , and to the north is the community of Gundelfingen in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district . Zähringen has almost 9400 inhabitants (as of the end of 2017).

history

A Zähringen castle is mentioned for the first time in a report by Otto von Freising in 1080 ; the first documentary evidence is found in 1128 in the Rotulus Sanpetrinus . The history of the castle's origins until then is in the dark. The village of Zähringen below is mentioned for the first time in 1008 in a deed of donation, the so-called deed of wilderness, from King Heinrich II to the diocese of Basel , together with the names of the Freiburg districts of Herdern and Wiehre , the neighboring community of Gundelfingen and other places in Breisgau . The Dukes of Zähringen were followed by the Counts of Freiburg , who sold the village of Zähringen to the Schnewlin Bernlapp in 1327 . In 1443 the village became the property of the Schnewlin zum Wiger and in 1536 that of the Schnewlin von Landeck , before the Lords of Sickingen inherited it at the end of the 16th century.

In the years 1822/23, the Catholic St. Blasius Church was built in Weinbrenner style according to the plans of Christoph Arnold , a student of Friedrich Weinbrenner .

Shortly before the incorporation, Zähringen had 2,185 inhabitants (1904). These included 1,926 Catholics , 253 Protestants and 6 others in 455 households and 237 buildings. On January 1, 1906, the union contract with the city of Freiburg came into force.

On March 10, 1910, Zähringen was connected to the tram with the opening of the line between Okenstrasse and Reutebachgasse . Line 4 has been running here from the exhibition center to the southern outskirts of Gundelfingen since December 2015 .

In 1958/59 the Protestant St. Thomas Church was built on Tullastrasse .

Culture and leisure

In June 2020, a pump track was opened in the Alban-Stolz-Anlage between Alban-Stolz-Straße and Isfahanallee .
