Zappa in New York is a live album by Frank Zappa . It was recorded at a series of concerts at the Palladium in New York City in December 1976.
Zappa originally planned to release the album in 1977, but the release was delayed due to disagreements between Zappa's DiscReet Records label and the distribution of Warner Bros. Records . In 1977 only a small number of LPs and cassettes appeared with the track list intended by Zappa. Shortly thereafter, Warner removed the song "Punky's Whips" without permission. Warner also rearranged the track order before the album was released in 1978.
When Zappa's distribution agreement with Warner ended in 1982, the rights reverted to him. Zappa released the album as a remixed double CD in 1991, on which "Punky's Whips" also appeared again. The CD version, however, contained a guitar playback version and four bonus tracks, including a much longer version of "Titties and Beer".
Members of the Saturday Night Live Band, such as Lou Marini and Tom Malone as well as the Brecker Brothers, play on the album . In addition, Don Pardo was invited to the Palladium concerts by Zappa. He read the opening comments for "Punky's Whips" and "The Illinois Enema Bandit".
Zappa in New York presented mostly new material. “Punky's Whips”, a story about Terry Bozzio's infatuation with Punky Meadows , the guitarist of the band Angel . Also the humorous "Titties and Beer" with Terry Bozzio in the role of the devil, with which Zappa tries to negotiate the reacquisition of the things mentioned in the title. In addition to the more amusing songs, Zappa also presents musically more complex pieces such as " The Black Page " and "Manx Needs Women".
"The Purple Lagoon", a longer instrumental piece, which took up the entire fourth page on the original double LP and, among other things, a. The themes of the hitherto unpublished “Approximate” from the “Grand Wazoo” era were processed and offered solo interludes by the Brecker Brothers (brass), bassist Patrick O'Hearn , saxophonist Ronnie Cuber and Zappa himself (electric guitar). There were also recordings of older pieces, such as the newly arranged waltz “Sofa”, which originally appeared on One Size Fits All , and “Big Leg Emma”, an old number by the Mothers of Invention.
