Zdoňov is located in the northern Braunauer Uplands in the valley of the Merkelsdorf brook ( Zdoňovský potok ), a left tributary of the Metuje ( Mettau ). Neighboring towns are Meziměstí and Vernéřovice in the east, Horní Teplice ( Oberweckelsdorf ) in the southeast and Janovice ( Johnsdorf ) and Hodkovice in the southwest. In the north lies the submerged village of Libná on the border with Poland , across the border are Kochanów in the north, Mieroszów in the northeast, Golińsk in the east and Chełmsko Śląskie in the west. In the south are the Adršpach-Weckelsdorf rock town and the ruins of Skály Castle .

history

Merkelsdorf was first mentioned in 1288 as "Merkelinsdorff" when the knight Witiko von Aupa / Alt Trautenau sold it to Duke Bolko I. von Schweidnitz . The latter gave it a year later, together with the villages of “Blaseysdorff” and “Caczbach”, to the Grüssau monastery , which was then a provost of the Bohemian Benedictine monastery in Opatowitz . "Merkelinsdorff" is no longer included in the deed of foundation of the Cistercian monastery founded by Bolko I in place of the Benedictine provosty from 1292. For the year 1350, however, it is listed as a village belonging to the Freudenburg castle district . Between 1351 and 1359 Merkelsdorf came to Hynek and Hynáček from Dubá to Wiesenburg . They sold Merkelsdorf between 1377 and 1382 to the rule Adersbach , which was probably owned by Hayman ( Hynek ) from Dubá on Náchod since 1368 . A school has been established since 1749, and new school buildings were built in 1785 and 1876.

After the abolition of patrimonial Merkelsdorf formed from 1850 a community in the Braunau district or in the judicial district of Politz . After the establishment of the Wekelsdorf judicial district , Merkelsdorf was part of the newly created judicial district. In 1869 the border was regulated towards the then Prussian Silesia. In addition to agriculture, flax processing was of economic importance from around 1830, which came to a standstill in the 1920s. At the end of the 19th century, four sandstone quarries were operated in Merkelsdorf. On July 14, 1932, a storm caused great agricultural damage.

After the Munich Agreement in 1938, Merkelsdorf, which was mainly populated by Germans, was added to the German Reich and until 1945 belonged to the Braunau district . In 1945 and 1946 the German residents were expelled . In 1949 Libná was incorporated. Since April 30, 1976 Zdoňov is a district of Teplice nad Metují.

For the year 1885 1,374 inhabitants were counted. After that, the population declined. In 1920 there were 1,241 inhabitants, in 1939 966 and 1961 only 300 inhabitants. In 1991 the place had 175 inhabitants. In 2001 the village consisted of 103 houses, in which 158 people lived.
