Zverinac is a village on the island of Zverinac in Croatia .

Location and inhabitants

Zverinac is located in the northwest of the island of the same name . Opposite is Božava on the island of Dugi Otok . Zverinac has ferry connections to Zadar and Božava. The place administratively belongs to the municipality of Sali , and is the only part of the municipality that is not on Dugi Otok. The 43 inhabitants (2011) live from fishing, agriculture and tourism.

history

Zverinac is first mentioned in 1421 as Suiran, from the word animal, 1501 Zvirinaz, later Zvirinac, then Zverinac. This is where the Glagolitic tradition developed. The Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola was built in 1690. In the village there is the Baroque Fanfonga palace from 1746, and the remains of walls from Roman times can still be found in Poripišće bay .
