Template:Infobox TV ratings The Fairly OddParents is an American animated television series created by Butch Hartman. It is shown on the children's television network Nickelodeon, and is currently one of the most popular shows on that network, second only to SpongeBob SquarePants. The television series is produced by Frederator Studios for the Nickelodeon cable channel, and distributed in Africa and the Middle East by the Canadian animation company Nelvana. Nickelodeon recently ordered 20 more half hour episodes for the show to air in 2007. [4]

Plot

The show is set in the fictional town of Dimmsdale, which is generally shown to be in northern California (although in "Fairy Idol", it was shown that Dimmsdale was located in Southern California) but also reflects the creator's hometown in Michigan. Episodes have had time travel to both Wild West and Colonial (East Coast) Dimmsdale. It follows the day-to-day life of 10-year-old Timmy Turner.

An only child, Timmy is often left by his parents to the care of an evil babysitter, Vicky. Just as his situation was particularly grim, he was granted a pair of fairy godparents, named Cosmo and Wanda, who had the power to grant his wishes and were charged by Fairyworld with making Timmy happy. Unfortunately, Cosmo is somewhat slow, and the two often come up with strange dangerous ideas; although well meaning, their wishes often go awry. Wanda, Cosmo's more sensible (and somewhat sarcastic) wife must devote her time to ensuring both Timmy's and Cosmo's safety, although occasionally out of rage she will create wacky plans. Since Cosmo and Wanda became Timmy's fairy godparents, a new host of characters entered his life: his maniacal fairy-obsessed teacher, Mr. Crocker (always enjoys giving F's, especially to Timmy) and various magical creatures such as Mama Cosma (Cosmo's mother), Jorgen Von Strangle, Norm the Genie, and The Pixies.

Timmy's fairies are mindful of their secretive existence and disguise themselves as various animals and objects in public. While in disguise, they always have the same colors to identify each of them: Cosmo is always a light green, and Wanda is always a light pink. The only exceptions is when they become goldfish and salt (Cosmo) and pepper shaker (Wanda); only their eyes retain their identifying colors. Other than Timmy, no one seems to notice green and pink talking birds, or notebooks with faces and gold crowns. However, on some occasions, people will note their strange colorings, such as when Timmy wished he had an older brother (in "Oh Brother!"). The older brother notes that when saving Cosmo (disguised as a cat) from the tree he says, "Hold on there, weird green cat!". Another time, in "A Bad Case of Diary-uh", Vicky writes in her diary about two squirrels that she had seen Timmy with, saying that the green one (Cosmo) looked kind of cute, and the pink one (Wanda) looked fat (After Wanda saw that bit, she went into a rare personality shift, becoming homicidal, twisted, and bent on getting revenge on Vicky for the insult.).

Timmy's parents also occasionally notice faces on his fairy's disguises. For instance, in "Engine Blocked", when Timmy's dad is pointing out a bunch of signs of him getting old, he says, "Hallucinating that my towels have faces?!", and Timmy's mom pointed out in "Abra-Catastrophe!" that Cosmo and Wanda had the same eyes that his notebooks and goldfish had. The only other person who has noted the faces and eyes is Mary Alice Sunshine/Doombringer, a minor villain who has only appeared in No Substitute for Crazy. When she finds Cosmo and Wanda, she makes a comment on how the pink pen (Wanda) looks very annoyed with "him" (Cosmo, who was posing as a pencil).

Unfortunately, the various ways that Cosmo and Wanda choose to hide tend to damage Timmy's school reputation. His unpopularity is apparently caused by his constant chatting with his fairies, which various students seem to notice, as the second Jimmy Timmy Power Hour tells you. A girl in the background says, "Oh my gosh! It's the boy who talks to inanimate objects! Just smile and back away slowly..."

Timmy Turner has a crush on a popular girl named Trixie, all though he knows he has no chances with her. When it comes to love, Cosmo and Wanda's magic can't do anything. From "threatmantic" (a portmanteau of threat and romantic) letters to making movies, Timmy will do whatever he can to win Trixie's love. Trixie has a crazy best friend who is popular and loves Timmy. Also, Vicky's sister Tootie has a crush on him. Chip Skylark who is a fictional popstar in the show but is voiced by real popstar Chris Kirkpatrick.

Crimson Chin "webisodes"

There were approximately 10 or 11 short Macromedia Flash cartoons featuring the Crimson Chin made for Nickelodeon's website in 2001. Some of the segments aired on the first season episodes of The Fairly OddParents that were compiled from the Oh Yeah! Cartoons shorts, were included on The Fairly OddParents: Superhero Spectacle DVD and sometimes are seen on Nicktoons Network (but all versions of the cartoons besides the internet versions are somewhat edited).

History

The Fairly OddParents first aired as a short film on Oh Yeah! Cartoons in 1998, which aired some ten episodes of the original show. Oh Yeah! Cartoons was cancelled in 2001, but Nickelodeon offered to pick up the franchise. This offer was accepted by creator Butch Hartman. The show began airing its own full-length episodes as its own series on March 31, 2001, alongside Invader ZIM. On April 11, 2006, Nickelodeon UK aired all nine Oh Yeah! Cartoons shorts in three episodes. These stories include "Where's the Wand" in which Vicky uses Wanda's wand, and "Too Many Timmys" in which Timmy makes copies of himself. Each pilot episode lasts for about seven minutes. Unlike the half-hour series, the animation in the shorts is not as smooth and the designs are notably different, including Timmy's parents Mr. and Mrs. Turner, whose faces are unseen. Other notable differences include voices. Timmy Turner, who was voiced by another actor (Mary Kay Bergman), instead of Tara Strong (Timmy's voice was dubbed by Tara for re-running of the shorts on the show), and Cosmo, who sounds incredibly different even though he was still voiced by Daran Norris. Also Cosmo and Wanda had different personalities. Both Godparents were originally dimwitted, but in the half-hour episodes Cosmo has gotten even dumber and Wanda has become the smarter spouse.

Popularity

Although The Fairly OddParents was not very popular in its first year, it began to catch on later, attracting both a child and adult fan base. SpongeBob SquarePants was the only thing keeping The Fairly OddParents from becoming Nickelodeon's most highly rated show at this point.

Early 2003 was the peak of popularity for The Fairly OddParents. Its ratings were extremely high, and it very briefly passed SpongeBob SquarePants. The show saw its very quick rise to the top and fall in summer of 2003 when the show's first TV movie, Abra-Catastrophe!, was aired. The film was a success and many products were merchandised.

After Abra-Catastrophe!, creator Butch Hartman created a new project for Nickelodeon called Danny Phantom.

A second Fairly OddParents TV movie was made, titled Channel Chasers. Since then, there have been other specials, like The Secret Origin of Denzel Crocker, The Jimmy Timmy Power Hour, Crash Nebula, The Jimmy Timmy Power Hour 2: When Nerds Collide, School's Out: The Musical, Fairy Idol, and The Jimmy Timmy Power Hour 3: The Jerkinators.

Nickelodeon ceased the production of the show late in 2005, with The Jerkinators as the final episode, though in the U.S the episode "Timmy the Barbarian/No Substitute for Crazy" was shown after The Jerkinators. Butch Hartman made the official announcement on his forum [5] on January 24, 2006. However, Butch announced on February 2, 2007 on his forum [6] that Nick has granted Fairly OddParents 20 more episode slots and that the show has resumed production.

A theatrical movie was planned for release by Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies, but was eventually dropped due to a regime change by Paramount, though the script was written. Hartman stated on his website that he would like to release the movie to DVD one day, but did not have any definitive plans to do so.[1] Since a bunch of e-mails (all by a kid named Kalvin Turner "KT" Koskela) have been sent to Butch Hartman, it might be possible the film will be picked up and scheduled as a theatrical movie.

The Fairly OddParents appeared in a $50 Best Western travel card over the 2006 summer period.[2]
