The Austrian Women's Soccer Cup was played for the 23rd time in the 1996/97 season. As the ÖFB Women's Cup , it was held for the fifth time by the Austrian Football Association . The USC Landhaus won the trophy for the eighth time.
Participating teams
For the Austrian Women's Football Cup of the 1996-97 season following 21 teams after the season placement have reference to the participation of the leagues Women's Bundesliga in 1995/96 , the 2nd Division East 1995/96 and the Regional League West 1995/96 listed are qualified. Teams that are crossed out did not take part in the competition for various reasons or are second teams and therefore did not play for the cup. The national champions or representatives of the 1995/96 season could also take part.

Tournament course
1st cup round
In the first round, the clubs from the 2nd Division East, the Regionalliga West and the regional league clubs, apart from the two Bundesliga relegated First Vienna FC 1894 and SC Neunkirchen, played for five places in the round of 16, SV Neulengbach, ATSV Sattledt and RW Rankweil had one Bye. The Styrian regional league team ASV Hohenau / Raab surprised with a 7-0 victory over DFV Juwelen Janecka. The clear 3-0 away win of USC Pilgersdorf at SV Donau was also unexpected.

Round of 16
The Bundesliga clubs and the relegated Bundesliga players only intervened in the second round of the cup. The later champions of the 2nd division, SV Neulengbach, underlined his suitability for the first division in a secure 4-1 victory over Bundesliga club DFC Heidenreichstein. The former Bundesliga club SC Neunkirchen had to accept a 0: 7 debacle at ESV Saalfelden-Harham. With the Neunkirchenerinnen, who stopped playing in the spring, the first signs of dissolution were already evident. ATSV Deutsch-Wagram and Vienna had an open exchange of blows, in which the Lower Austrians had the better end with 8: 4.

Quarter finals
In the quarter-finals, SV Neulengbach was able to throw another Bundesliga club out of the competition with a 1-0 win at ASV Vösendorf. The later champion USC Landhaus and runner-up Union Kleinmünchen impressed with clear victories.

In the final, which was held in St. Pölten - Stattersdorf in Lower Austria , there was a clash between master USC Landhaus and runner-up Union Kleinmünchen. The Linz women defended themselves as best they could, but ultimately had to admit defeat 2: 3 and could not prevent the double success of the USC Landhaus.
