The ÖFB Cup was played for the 47th time in the 1980/81 season. For the first time, a club from Styria was able to win the cup with the Grazer AK. The final opponent Austria Salzburg lost the final round for the second time in a row.

In the 46th Austrian Cup final, the Grazer Athletik-Sport Klub and SV Austria Salzburg faced each other for the first time. The home team won the first leg in Salzburg-Lehen just 1-0 with a Schildt goal. In the second leg in the Liebenau stadium two weeks later, the GAK took a 1-0 lead in the second minute of the game with a penalty from Stering. There were no further hits in the regular season, the game went into overtime. Since the GAK was only ten since the 63rd minute, Moder was sent off with red. Salzburg coach Starek was also relegated to the stands. Alfred Riedl scored the decisive second goal for Graz in stoppage time.
