Similar to German, Swiss and English hip-hop, Austrian hip-hop began in the early 1990s. The first "official" hip-hop album, Swound Vibes by The Moreaus , was released in 1990. However, defining artists for this period were the groups Schönheits Fehler , Fünfhaus Posse and Texta . The youth radio station FM4 with the program Tribe Vibes , which was founded after the program reform of today's format program Ö3 , has played a major role to this day . The Austrian pop musician Falco was also seen as one of the pioneers of Austrian hip-hop with his style of rap , although he denied this role several times.

In 2000, the group “Defects” achieved their first commercial success, after continuous airplay on the radio station FM4. With SexDrugsAndHipHop and the single Fuck You , the crew achieved national success. At the same time, the formed Rooftop Clique , a consortium of eight Austrian underground hip-hop crews ( HRC , perverse , Sheyla J , A.geh Really? , Gerard MC , Bonz and Seizu ).

In the mid-2000s, the Tonträger Records label, founded by the Texta group, was able to establish itself on the alternative music scene in Austria. Among the well-known performers are, for example, striking actions . The Linz producer duo Beatlefield (consisting of Chakuza and DJ Stickle ) was later able to gain a foothold in Germany when they produced Bushido album Staatsfeind No. 1 and signed a contract with his label ersguterjunge . Since then, Chakuza has also been successful as a solo artist. At the end of 2007 MC J aka Big J was appointed CEO of Black Wall Street Europe, the label of American rapper The Game .

In 2007 the group Sua Kaan from Vienna- Ottakring caused a media stir after they published a video with a song that was supposed to glorify violence. Almost three years later she released her first album and reached the Ö3 Austria Top 40 . At the beginning of 2008 the group Die Vamummtn published the Vamummtn Krocha hymn , a parody of the youth culture of the Krocha that developed in Vienna . The song was able to place itself in the Austrian charts as the first of an Austrian hip-hop crew in a long time.

Mieze Medusa , who won the protest song contest in 2007 with Not My Revolution (Mieze Medusa & tenderboy feat. Violetta Parisini ) , Yasmo and the group MTS (initially multitaskingistas ) are among the more well-known women in Austrian hip-hop .

In 2010 Skero , a member of Texta, published together with DJane Joyce Muniz Kabinenparty , an adaptation of the track Popozuada Rock n 'Roll by Edu K., which reached number 4 in the Austrian single charts. 2010 were the Trackshittaz with Oida taunz! the first Austrian hip-hop group to make it to number 1 on the charts. The group's awareness was first promoted through the Internet portal YouTube and then through the program Heroes of Tomorrow , in which member Lukas Plöchl took part.

The rappers RAF Camora (later RAF 3.0 ) and Nazar , who achieved top 10 placements in the German and Austrian sales charts, also celebrated comparatively great successes . The latter was able to go straight to number 1 on the album charts with Camouflage in September 2014.

In 2017, the Viennese RAF Camora, who has now lived in Berlin for ten years, was the first Austrian rapper to achieve a platinum record in Germany with an album ( plastic palms with Bonez MC ) for over 200,000 units sold and is thus the one to date most successful rappers in Austria.

On August 1, 2019, Hood Music, Austria's first terrestrial hip-hop radio station, was founded.

Styles

The Vamummtn are among the best known representatives of the slangsta

As with other hip-hop scenes, the dialect is characteristic of Austrian hip-hop. Especially in the alternative area, for example, A.geh Really? or make a name for the group Striking Actions with texts in the Austrian dialect. Even the first album Aufpudeln of Fünfhaus Posse was in Vienna dialect held.

Since the dialect is generally used ironically , Austrian musicians who can be assigned to gangsta rap, such as Nazar, mostly rap in High German.

Some members of the Austrian slang rap scene also refer to themselves as slangsta ( suitcase word from the terms slang and gangsta ). This movement in the Austrian rap / hip-hop scene raps exclusively in Austrian dialect. The main part of this scene is gathered around the label Twomorrow , founded in Salzburg in early 2006 , which mainly has Linzer and Salzburg Slangsta (including MOZ ) under contract.
