Public Enemy No. 1 Back from the Skyline to the Curb
(2006)

Public enemy No. 1 is the third solo album by the Berlin rapper Bushido . It was released on November 4, 2005 on Bushido's label ersguterjunge and is the rapper's second solo album since he left Aggro Berlin and the first since he split from long-time producer DJ Ilan . The producer duo Beatlefield Productions was responsible for the majority of the productions of the album , in their studio in Linz most of the recordings of the album took place. Bushido had previously been taken into custody in Linz on suspicion of serious bodily harm and was then not allowed to leave Austria until the day of the trial, which coincided with the release date of the album. Public enemy No. 1 reached number four in the album charts in Germany and was awarded a gold record in 2006 for over 100,000 units sold .

background

With his previous album Electro Ghetto , Bushido entered the German album charts at number 6. At the same time, his lyrics, like those of other successful rappers such as Sido and Fler , were part of a public discourse and therefore sometimes heavily criticized because of their alleged increased representation of violence. Bushido's previous publications King of Kingz and Vom Bordstein bis zur Skyline were indexed in 2005, as were the label samplers of his former employer Aggro Berlin Aggro Announcement No. 2 and Aggro Announcement No. 3, which were created with his participation by the Federal Testing Office for Media Harmful to Young People. Bushido said he did not want the album title Staatsfeind Nr. 1 to be understood as an expression of his own differences with the German constitutional state . Nevertheless, the rapper repeatedly emphasized the “subversive” feeling of “having to explain himself everywhere” and whether he was to see increasing criticism against his person being marginalized.

In August 2005, Bushido was arrested in Linz on suspicion of serious bodily harm on charges of beating up a 20-year-old Austrian with two bodyguards. Bushido was only released a little more than two weeks later on payment of a deposit of 100,000 euros, but had to remain in Austria until the trial. According to Bushido, this was the highest deposit in the history of the city of Linz. At the same time, Bushido, who had separated from his long-term producer DJ Ilan in the same year, was looking for a new producer and was already aware of the Linz producer duo Beatlefield , consisting of Chakuza and DJ Stickle , as part of his Electro Ghetto Tour become. After his release from prison, Bushido, who in this context also lived temporarily with Chakuza, began working with him on public enemy No. 1 . Both Chakuza and DJ Stickle were then signed by Bushido to his record company ersguterjunge . On November 4, 2005, at the same time as the album's release date, the Linz Regional Court closed the proceedings against Bushido against payment of a fine of 20,000 euros.

Emergence

The process of creating the album was largely shaped by Bushido's court case in Linz. Since Bushido was not allowed to leave Austria, most of it was written and recorded by Public Enemy No. 1 in the Beatlefield Studios in Linz. Most of the artists represented with guest appearances on the album, such as the singer Cassandra Steen, had to travel to Linz to record their contributions. A guest appearance by the rapper Azad , who is still represented on Electro Ghetto , was therefore not possible. An exception in this regard was the title The Voice of the Nation , recorded together with Godsilla , which Bushido claims was recorded on tour and written on the tour bus.

content

Public Enemy No. 1 contains an increased number of quieter, more melancholy tracks compared to the Bushido albums published to date. Bushido had already published songs of this kind before, such as the title Butterfly and Hope dies last on his previous solo album Electro Ghetto , but public enemy No. 1 with Engel , Look in my eyes , Moment and Until we meet again , on which Bushido is accompanied again by the Glashaus singer Cassandra Steen , as in Hope dies injured , an increased density of softer tracks.

As in the previous publication of the rapper, however, the large number of pieces of music can still be assigned to the genre of battle rap . This applies, for example, to the title Endgegner or the song Harter Brocken , on which the Dipset rapper J. R. Writer is represented with a 47-second part.

In an interview, Bushido emphasized that he deliberately did not want to offer too large a frame on the album to the impressions of his recent prison stay. Nevertheless, this is also addressed in places, for example in the song Untergrund .

production

A total of six producers were involved in the production of the album. Most of the beats were produced by the producer duo Beatlefield . They produced the tracks Mein Leben lang , Hymne der Straße , Untergrund , Ab 18 , Life is hard , The villain , Look into my eyes , Public enemy No. 1 and Until we meet again . Sti , who is under contract with Azad 's Bozz Music label as a house producer, produced the tracks Waffendealer and Moment . Two tracks were also produced by Decay , namely The Voice of the Nation and We rule Germany . Kingsize , who is under contract with Eko Fresh's label German Dream , produced the track Harter Brocken . Bushido himself is responsible for the background music for Engel . The track Endgegner was produced by Selfmade Records producer Rizbo .

Guest appearances

The features include the ersguterjunge rappers Baba Saad , D-Bo , Billy 13 & Chakuza, as well as the singer Cassandra Steen , Eko Fresh , I-Luv-Money-Records member Godsilla and Diplomats rapper JR Writer .

Singles

Two songs on the album were released as singles . These are Bosses , which appeared on October 21, 2005, and Moment . Videos were shot for both tracks. The video about final boss made it to number 1 of the German TRL Most Wanted . The single for Endgegner contains the track Staatsfeind Nr. 1 , as well as two remixes by Kingsize & Sti of the same track, Endgegner and the instrumental version of the song. The follow-up singleoment , released on December 23, 2005 and produced by Bozz Music producer Sti, contains three versions of the song and two bonus tracks contributed by Saad ( I hold the line ) and Chakuza ( don't speak ). Endgegner reached number 13 in the German singles charts and stayed in the top 100 for a total of 13 weeks. Moment reached position # 17 in the singles charts as the highest position.

Tours

In November 2005, immediately after the album was released, Bushido played a club tour entitled Gegen Kaution on Tour 2005 in the German cities of Berlin, Hamburg , Zwickau , Cologne and Munich . The title was based on his stay in prison in Austria. The broader public enemy No. 1 tour followed in January and February 2006 with a total of 24 concerts in Germany and Austria. The concert that was held on January 27, 2006 in Berlin's Columbiahalle was held in 2006 under the title Germany, give me a mic! released as a live album.

The e-zine laut.de rated public enemy No. 1 with 3 out of 5 possible stars. The editors particularly praised the production of Beatlefield and the guest contributions by Chakuza. As a highlight of the album, the recorded jointly with Cassandra Steen was agreed until we meet again , which the editors identified as "perhaps the best track in the Berliner's career". Otherwise, especially “deep songs” like Moment and See In My Eyes , but also selected harder titles like Arms Dealer , Life is Hard , Bosses and Anthem of the Street were found to be good. At the same time a higher rating of the album was prevented "by brutal slip-ups [which] lastingly diminish the positive overall impression". In addition to the Eko-Fresh subsurface feature , the titles Ab 18 and Harter Brocken in particular were mentioned in this regard . The editors judged the latter two titles: "The rhymes seem so based on the blueprint that you really can't ignore them."

Commercial win

The album reached number 4 as the highest position in the album charts and stayed in the top 100 for a total of 18 weeks. In Austria, Staatsfeind Nr. 1 rose to number 13 on the album charts on November 18, 2005, and then stayed there for four consecutive weeks . On January 13, 2006, the album returned to number 75, where it was also placed in the following week, before it was charted for the last time on January 27, 2006 at number 67 in Austria. In Switzerland the album reached number 32 and stayed in the top 100 for a total of 3 weeks. For public enemy no. 1 , Bushido received a gold record in Germany for more than 100,000 sold copies , as he had for Electro Ghetto before .
