Alameda is a city in Alameda County in the US state of California with 73,812 inhabitants (2010). The urban area covers an area of 59.5 km². The city is largely located on Alameda Island on the east bank of San Francisco Bay between Oakland in the northwest and San Leandro in the southeast. It belongs to the metropolitan area of San Francisco Bay Area . Part of the Bay Farm Island and the artificial island of Coast Guard Island , which is public but not accessible, belong to the urban area .
Demographics
The 2010 census found a population of 73,812. The urban population increased by around 1500 within a decade. The 2000 census showed a population of 72,259. Almost half of the population are whites of European descent, making up the relative majority of the population. With a share of 30 percent, Asians are represented above average compared to California or the entire USA. Latinos make up only eleven percent of the population, which is below the California mean. At just over six percent, African Americans are a minority. According to the 2010 census, there were 30,123 households in Alameda. For every 100 women there were 88.5 men, while the median age of the urban population was 40.7 years.

On July 9, 1922, the athlete and later actor Johnny Weissmüller set a new world record in swimming over 100 meters in exactly 58.6 seconds in Alameda.
The Naval Air Station Alameda was located in Almeda until 1997 . The USS Hornet (CV-12) , a former aircraft carrier of the US Navy , can be viewed as a museum ship on the site of the former Naval Air Station Alameda . The ship achieved worldwide fame in 1969 when it took the astronauts of the first Apollo 11 mission to the moon and the crew of the Apollo 12 mission on board a short time later .
