Career

Alexander Georgiev was born in Bulgarian Russia, but moved with his family to Russia a little later and has since been citizens of both nations. He started playing ice hockey in Moscow and later moved to the youth department of Chimik Voskressensk . However, without being used in their professional department, the goalkeeper was drawn to the Finnish first division club TPS Turku for the 2014/15 season . For their U20 he ran from then on in the Jr. A SM-liiga , the highest junior league in Finland, while at the same time he played his first ten games for the men in the Liiga . After another year of play, alternating between professional field, junior selection and an engagement on loan at SaPKo in the second-class Mestis , he established himself as the second goalkeeper behind Oskari Setänen at Turku in the 2016/17 season . After 27 inserts and the league's best Gegentorschnitt of 1.70 Georgijew aroused the interest of teams in the National Hockey League (NHL), so he one in July 2017 entry contract with the New York Rangers signed, but without previously in an NHL Entry Draft takes into account to have become.

As expected, the Rangers used the goalkeeper on their farm team , the Hartford Wolf Pack , in the American Hockey League (AHL) before making his NHL debut in February 2018 and making a total of ten appearances by the end of the season. Georgiev has been a regular member of the Rangers' squad since the beginning of the 2018/19 season and initially acted as a backup for Henrik Lundqvist . In the 2019/20 season, however, the Bulgarian already played more games than the Swede, who for the first time in 15 years was ousted as the clear “number 1” of Broadway blueshirts .

International

Georgiev gained his first international experience with the Russian U20 national team at the U20 World Cup in 2016 . He denied doing five games, including the final that the Sbornaja against the hosts from Finland 3: 4 after Overtime lost and thus received the silver medal.
