Alton is in the immediate outskirts of McAllen - the largest city in the statistical metropolitan area of McAllen-Edinburgh-Mission. Neighboring cities and towns are, clockwise from the west: Doffing, Citrus City, McAllen, Palmhurst and West Sharyland. The urban area covers around 15 square kilometers. The main axes are Main Avenue in a west-east direction and Alton Boulevard in a north-south direction. In terms of settlement density, the urban area is divided into a western and an eastern half. Both are roughly the same size. With Armstrong's Alton Colonia and Palm Lake Estates 4 Colonia , both halves of the city contain Colonia settlements - residential areas that are often poorly equipped in terms of supply and primarily serve as a residential refuge for new migrants . In terms of landscape, Alton lies in the transition zone between the lower Rio Grande Valley , a flat, fertile river bordering region, in which mainly citrus and vegetable intensive cultivation is carried out, and the drier, less arable-suitable area, which adjoins it to the north and west . The climate in the region is subtropical and subhumid . The temperature data for the neighboring town of McAllen ranging from an average of 8 ° C in January to 35 ° C in July . The average annual temperature is 23 ° C. The average annual rainfall is 584 l / m². The main rainy months are May and September.

The city was founded in 1911 when the San Benito and Rio Grande Valley Railway was founded , a new railway line in the Rio Grande Valley. The founders, employees of the Alton Illinois Railroad , gave the city the name of its city of origin in Illinois . The first building was a train station . A post office was operated between 1913 and 1916, and the Alton Independent School District was founded in the 1920s. Economically, the new foundation made a name for itself primarily through the mining of sedimentary rocks that were delivered to the north for construction projects . The further economic development was significantly shaped by the entrepreneur John H. Shary. Shary initiated the construction of irrigation systems and citrus farms and organized a municipal, independent water supply . In 1967 the Catholic Church of San Martin de Porres was built. In the second half of the 20th century , the community developed into a dormitory and commuter city for the nearby McAllen regional center. In 1978 Alton received city rights as an Incorporated City.

The available data on population development diverge. While the contribution to the city in the Handbook of Texas for 1980 mentions the number 3,069, those of the demographic information-savvy web portal population.us are around 300 lower. The same applies to further figures on the population. The city hit the headlines on September 21, 1989 when a Dr. Pepper - Truck drove into a school bus and pushed it into a caliche pit. In what is considered to be the worst school bus accident ever in Texas, 21 children were killed; 60 were injured.
