The Archdiocese of Vancouver ( Latin Archidioecesis Vancuveriensis , English Archdiocese of Vancouver ) is a Roman Catholic Archdiocese in Canada with its seat in Vancouver .
Location and dates
It covers an area of approximately 120,000 square kilometers in the southern and central part of British Columbia . 430,000 Catholics live in the archdiocese - that is 15.3 percent of the total population, who receive pastoral care in 77 parishes (as of 2014).
history
The archbishopric was on December 14, 1863 by Pope Pius IX. established as the Vicariate Apostolic of British Columbia and elevated to the status of the Diocese of New Westminster in 1890. In 1908 it received the rank of archdiocese under its current name.
