action

Berlin in 1944: Three German-Americans who have been in the German Reich since the beginning of the Second World War are called up for a special task: Ferdinand Steinbichler, whose mother lives in New Orleans , came to Berlin for the Summer Olympics in 1936 and stayed there hang. Paul Blümel once ran a haulage company in Canada with his brother . He was surprised by the start of the war when he wanted to bring his mother to the American continent. Third in the league is Willi Kuhlke from Berlin, who lived with his wife and father-in-law in Los Angeles until shortly before the war began . He actually came back to Berlin to visit his sick heir aunt. He has never seen his son Pietro, who was born in the meantime. Because of their knowledge of American way of life, the three are entrusted with running the "Vole Operation". Behind the cover name is nothing less than the order to land a submarine on the American coast and blow up the Lockheed aircraft factory.

The US defense has long known about the German attack plans. Although the FBI monitors the coast particularly closely, Steinbichler, Blümel and Kuhlke can break through the barrier undetected and go into hiding in Los Angeles. There they look for the middlemen Konrad Czerny and William Shake, who have further instructions ready. The three Germans, who are forbidden from contacting their family members, are gradually beginning to doubt their mission. Shortly after learning of the unsuccessful assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler , the spies found themselves in the apartment of Kuhlke's father-in-law, the Italian singing teacher Angelo Pirrone. It was there that Willi saw his son Pietro for the first time and learned that his wife Anna was a singer in the American troop support group .

By chance, Steinbichler, Blümel and Kuhlke again escape the FBI, which is now pulling out all the stops against the supposed top agents. They have long since given up their sabotage mission and are on their way to Arizona with the initiated Angelo Pirrone . There the three Germans can gain access to the camp where Anna sings. The police come so close on their heels that they prefer to retire as seasonal workers on the ranch of George Dalton and his lovely daughter Suzy. Old Dalton finally ensures that Ferdinand Steinbichler is drafted into the US Army under his false name . Suzy Dalton warns Ferdinand just in time about the numerous wanted posters that the FBI has distributed in the area. So the three have to go into hiding again.

The three Germans are becoming increasingly aware that if they are arrested as civilians in disguise, they will end up on the gallows. Angelo Pirrone, whose daughter is now in front of the camera in Hollywood , has the saving idea. In the film studio, he quickly gives the wanted people a few costumes from the fund for an anti-German film. When the FBI investigators have finally reached their goal, Steinbichler, Blümel and Kuhlke face them in impeccable Nazi uniforms. Instead of the feared death penalty, she is now awaiting imprisonment .

History of origin

Background and script

In 1960 the film producer Artur Brauner financially contributed to Harald Philipp's successful war film Division Brandenburg . Then Brauner and Philipp wanted to bring Reinhold Pabel's autobiographical novel Feinde sind auch Menschen (original title: Enemies are Human ), also set during World War II , to the screen. Philipp, who also wrote the screenplay with the help of Fred Denger , created an agent film - satire with serious undertones. The director said of the project: “The three normal consumers of character, made up of heart and political stupidity, recognize the ambiguity of their actions.” The working title of the film was at times three against America .

production

The shooting took place from September to November 24, 1961 in Spain , Gibraltar , Berlin and in the studios of CCC-Film in Berlin-Haselhorst . The film architects were Otto Erdmann and Oskar Pietsch . Irms Pauli took on the costume advice .

Reviews

"Not a musical, as the title suggests, but a secret agent story that does not want to be taken seriously, the characters of which [are] designed in different ways."

- Paimann's film lists , February 1962

"Foolishly conceived and tastelessly staged espionage comedy, which, with its mild jokes, is hardly able to meet even the smallest entertainment demands."
