The Austin 16 was released as a new mid-range car by the Austin Motor Company in 1932 . In the late 1930s there was also the smaller Austin 15.9 model . After the Second World War, the 16 reappeared with a new engine, but the pre-war body. It served as a stopgap until completely redesigned models were introduced.

The Austin 16 hp , a four-door sedan , had a side-controlled six-cylinder in-line engine with 2,249 cc and drove at 96 km / h. The Austin 16 thus filled the gap between the Austin 12 and the Austin 20 . From the Austin 20 he had taken over the engine design with a chain-driven camshaft at the rear end of the engine block, from the Austin 12 the chassis.

The car was of a modern design for its time and had a four-speed gearbox flanged to the engine and wheel suspensions on semi-elliptical springs. Safety glass was introduced in 1929. From 1934, 3rd and 4th gear were synchronized. An early automatic transmission was also available, but it didn't sell very well.

Production stopped two years later. The successor was the Austin 18 .

From 1935 there was a smaller brother, the Austin 15.9 (16), also with a side-controlled six-cylinder in-line engine, but only 1,711 cc. Due to its smaller size and weight, it reached a top speed of 99 km / h.

After only two years it was replaced by its successor, the Austin 14 .

Another Austin 16 appeared in 1945 , which only had the name in common with its predecessor. It was the first "new" car from Austin Motor Cie. after World War II . It had a brand new, overhead, four-cylinder in-line engine - the first ever used in an Austin - with a capacity of 2,199 cc, but it used the body of the Austin 12 , which - like the pre-war Austin 8 and Austin 10 - continued to be manufactured. The engine output was 67 bhp (49 kW) at 3800 min −1 and the vehicle drove at 120 km / h. In addition to the four-door sedan, there was also a station wagon.

In the cold winter of 1947, Alan Hess, then PR manager of the company, and his team took three Austin 16s on a promotional drive for Austin and visited seven northern European capitals in seven days. Despite the difficult traffic situation caused by heavy snowfall, the vehicles mastered the task successfully.

In 1949 production of the Austin 16 ceased. The successor was the Austin A70 Hampshire .
