For the qualification for this competition, the rankings of the Basketball Bundesliga 2009/10 after the first half of the season were decisive. In addition to the host of the Final Four tournament, the six best-placed teams in the first round table were also qualified. If the host was among the first six best-placed teams, the seventh-placed team was also qualified. The pairings were determined by lottery, which also decided on the home right in the qualifying round. The winner or advancement in the competition was determined in the knockout system within a regular basketball game. There was no second leg; if it was a draw after 40 minutes of regular playing time, extensions of five minutes each were played until a winner was determined at the end of an extension.
The hosts were the Deutsche Bank Skyliners from Frankfurt am Main . Because of the better direct comparison after the first half of the season, the Eisbären Bremerhaven qualified for the competition. Without exception, the home teams were able to win in the qualifying round. On the Top Four weekend from April 10th to 11th, 2010 in the Ballsporthalle Frankfurt , hosts Skyliners Frankfurt lost the final game against Brose Baskets from Bamberg, who later won the play-off finals of the championship against the same opponent .
The teams of the two seasons ProA and ProB in the 2nd basketball league played their own cup competition with the teams that qualified via the cup competitions of the regional associations without the teams in the first basketball league. This cup competition of the German Basketball Federation was then discontinued. The winner of this competition was determined at a Final Four tournament in the BasCats Arena in Cuxhaven on May 1st and 2nd, 2010. In addition to the first two winners of the ProA 2009/10 , champions BBC Bayreuth and host Cuxhaven BasCats , the ProB league team Würzburg Baskets and the regional league team BiG Oettinger from Gotha were also qualified. The winner was the BBC Bayreuth, who had won promotion to the first basketball league with the ProA championship.
