Bahri Altıntabak (born January 1, 1939 in Izmir ) is a former Turkish football player . Through his many years of work for Galatasaray Istanbul , he is strongly associated with this association. He was an important part of the team that had a strong influence on Turkish football in the 1960s with players like Metin Oktay , Kadri Aytaç , Suat Mamat , Uğur Köken and Turgay Şeren . During his time at Galatasaray he was the player behind Oktay who had scored the most league goals for the club. Due to his adaptability, he was used successfully during his career as a left footer in the positions of left defender to left winger.

Player career

Goztepe Izmir

Altıntabak grew up in Bornova , a district of the western Turkish city of Izmir. The beginnings of his football career have not been documented in detail. The historiography available about him begins with his work in the youth department of Göztepe Izmir in 1957. At this club he was apprenticed to older teammates such as Gürsel Aksel , Ruhi Karaduman and Emin Çandarlı . At the time of his entry into the professional squad, there was no cross-national professional professional league in Turkey. Instead, regional leagues existed in metropolitan areas such as Istanbul , Ankara and Izmir, of which İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi (German: Istanbul Professional League ) was considered the most renowned and İzmir Profesyonel Ligi (German: Professional League Izmir ) came third. Göztepe took part in the latter in the competition and was one of the most successful teams in the league with five championships. Altıntabak was used for Göztepe in this league and completed a game in the Federasyon Kupası (German Association Cup ) in the spring of 1958 .

From the spring of 1959, Altıntabak and Göztepe took part in the newly founded and nationwide Millî Lig (today's Süper Lig). This new league replaced the previous regional leagues in the larger metropolitan areas, such as the Izmir professional league . The first season of the Millî Lig was played from February 1959 to June 1959 and ended with a win for Fenerbahçe Istanbul . The team Göztepes, trained by the former football player Reha Eken , finished in 4th place in the table this season, with Altıntabak being used in eleven of 14 possible league games. At this point, his ancestral position was that of left-back. In the second Milli-Lig season, the team only finished in the middle of the table. However, Altıntabak completed 36 of 28 league games, played in left midfield, became one of the league's shooting stars and made several Istanbul clubs interested in him.

Galatasaray Istanbul

Galatasaray took an early interest in old tobacco and switched on his manager, the former player legend of the club Gündüz Kılıç , as early as February 1960 . After the end of the season, Galatasaray intensified its efforts to get old tobacco and got competition from arch-rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul . In addition to a transfer fee, they also offered their two players Turgut Yelmen and Seracettin Kırklar for Altıntabak . Göztepe, however, rejected the offer from both clubs. After months of negotiations, Galatasaray reached an agreement with Göztepe for a transfer fee of 75,000 Turkish Lira , whereas Altıntabak claimed 50,000 Lira for two years. Finally, Altıntabak signed a two-year contract in the presence of a notary and was to receive a salary of 60.00 lira from Galatasaray for the next two years.

For the 1960/61 season , the former player legend Gündüz Kılıç, that Kılıç who initiated the change Altıntabaks, was hired as head coach at Galatasaray. Kılıç, who had already celebrated great success as a coach with Galatasaray in the mid-1950s, played with the team over the entire season with Fenerbahçe and the championship and only awarded them on the last day of the game with a point to their arch rivals. Altıntabak who was used at Göztepe as the left central defender, in the left midfield or left winger, was used by Kılıç in the left midfield and supported the left winger Uğur Köken in the offensive play of his team . In this role he scored nine league goals in his first season for Galatasaray, making him the club's most successful goalscorer behind star striker Metin Oktay . He was the match winner in the derby on January 1, 1961 against Beşiktaş Istanbul . In the match played in the Dolmabahçe Stadium , he converted Oktay's indirect free kick with a side pull to make his team's 1-0 final score. After Oktay had migrated to the Italian club US Palermo in the summer of 1961 , Altıntabak was even more involved in the offensive department of his team. In the Milli-Lig season 1961/62 he advanced to the top scorer of his team and ended the season with twelve goals. He had a significant share in winning the first Turkish championship in the club's history. Also in this past season, Altıntabak was the match winner in a derby. In the derby played against Fenerbahçe again on January 1, he again scored the goal to make it 1-0 for his team.

After this successful season for the club, Kılıç tried to commit the most important players from his first coaching period at Galatasaray again. At the end of the past season, a return campaign was already underway for star striker Metin Oktay, who had switched to US Palermo. After months of negotiations, Oktay's transfer was completed in late July 1962. In addition, the offensive all-rounder Kadri Aytaç was brought back from arch-rival Fenerbahçe . In addition to these two former players, the right- winger Tarık Kutver was also committed. By buying these offensive players, Altıntabak lost his regular place and played alongside the players Metin Oktay, Kadri Aytaç, Uğur Köken , Suat Mamat , Tarık Kutver and Ayhan Elmastaşoğlu , who formed a very successful offensive team in the 1962/63 season and a large part of the 105 league goals achieved, no longer a major role. Although he played almost all of his club's competitive games until the second half of the season, with the permission of the coaching staff in the spring of 1963, he was missing a few training units due to the upcoming intermediate exams for his studies. Although he was always in the team until April 1963, he was not used between January and April. In April 1963 he was suspended from the team squad. After the Altıntabak association stopped paying his salary, he left Istanbul and stayed in his hometown of Izmir for a while. Galatasaray, on the other hand, tried to exchange the old tobacco that was no longer seeded for the goalkeeper of Göztepe, Ali Artuner . A month later, he was reassigned to the team and played most of the remaining competitive games of his team by the end of the season. In the 1962/63 season his team succeeded in the Turkish championship and thus the title defense. Altıntabak's team also won the newly introduced Turkish Football Cup this season , becoming the first Turkish cup winner as well as the first Turkish double winner. In addition, in the 1962/63 European Cup, the quarter-finals and thus the best placement of a Turkish team to date in this competition in particular and in all European club competitions in general was achieved. In the quarterfinals, the team failed to AC Milan .

Although Altıntabak had fought for a regular place again towards the end of the season, he was put on the sales list by the club management two weeks before the end of the season with other players. Later, the club's management decided against selling Altıntabaks and instead extended the expired contract with this player. In the next season, the team started by winning the pre-season cup competition of the TSYD Istanbul Cup , although Altıntabak was not used in this tournament. In the new season Altıntabak failed to assert itself as an undisputed regular player, but he was regularly used by the coaching staff. During the season he achieved hat tricks against the two teams Altınordu Izmir and Altay Izmir . This season, the team in the league missed the connection to the top of the table and finished the league in 3rd place in the table. Altıntabak was despite his 19 league appearances with nine goals behind Oktay the second best goalscorer of his team.

In the next three seasons, however, he was unable to build on this performance. Instead, he played between ten and 13 league games each season, but helped his team to gain points in these games with important goals. Also in the 1964/65 season, his team gambled away the championship. In both seasons 1963/64 and 1964/65, the team won the Turkish Football Cup for the second and third time. As a result, Altıntabak was also part of the team that won the Turkish Football Cup three times in a row for the first time. Also in the 1965/66 season the team had no chance in the championship and awarded it with six points clearly different to arch rivals Beşiktaş, but was able to win the Turkish Football Cup for the fourth time in a row and thus set a record in this competition that is still valid today. The 1966/67 season played the team for a long time for the championship, but the league was finished in 3rd place in the table. In addition, the team was eliminated in the otherwise safe Turkish Football Cup in the quarter-finals against Altay Izmir and ended the season without a title.

After four untitled seasons in the Turkish championship and the overall untitled last season, a revision at Galatasaray was decided in the summer of 1967. The long-time coach Gündüz Kılıç was replaced by Bülent Eken and many players were put on the sales list, including Altıntabak. When he left Galatasaray, he was the player with 38 first division goals behind Metin Oktay who had scored the second most first division goal for Galatasaray. It was only later that he was overtaken in this respect by players of the following generations and is currently 17th in the list of players with the most top division players for Galatasaray .

Altınordu Izmir

After Galatasaray put it up for sale, Altıntabak first negotiated with PTT SK and then with Altınordu Izmir . So he moved back to his hometown in July for a transfer fee of 130,000 lira. At his new club, he played in 22 of the possible 30 league games in his first season and only reached relegation with his team on the last match day. In the next two seasons Altıntabak played about half of the possible league games. After his club in the 1968/69 season still safely achieved relegation, this was missed in the 1969/70 season . So Altıntabak went with his team in the 2nd Futbol Ligi and played here for a season. He then ended his career in the summer of 1971.

National team

Altıntabak began his career with the Turkish national teams in 1960 during his time at Galatasaray with a commitment for the second selection of the Turkish national team , which was then known as the Turkish B national team.

About a year after playing for the B national team, he was nominated in October 1961 by the Turkish national coach Sandro Puppo for a test match against the Romanian national team in the squad of the Turkish national team . In the game of October 8, 1961 Altıntabak completed his first and only A international match.
