Behringen is a district of the city of Stadtilm in the Ilm district ( Thuringia ). It has about 215 inhabitants (as of 2007).

geography

Behringen is located on the north bank of the Wipfra at an altitude of about 360 meters. To the north of the village lie the wide plains of the Thuringian Basin , to the south the forerunners of Reinsbergen and Thuringian Forest begin at the 502 meter high Willinger Berg . About one kilometer west of the village is the Behringer Schenke homestead, which is part of Behringen and is now home to an agricultural business and a civil engineering and road construction company.

history

The first reliable documented mention of the place as Beringe comes from the year 1188. Wolfgang Kahl assumes the first documented mention of Behringen for the period 780–817. The name is traced back to the settlement of a bero (or bear ). In the late Middle Ages, a manor was built in the village , the manor house of which was also called the castle . It belonged to the Counts of Henneberg until the 16th century , before it passed to the Counts of Schwarzburg in 1536 . Since the 18th century the manor has been owned by different families. Under Lord von Thumshirn , the manor house was expanded into a castle in 1716 and today's village church and school were built in 1717 . In the middle of the 19th century, Behringer emigrated to North America. Since 1905 the water supply has been ensured by a high pressure water pipe, in 1908 the public telephone connection and in 1924 the connection to the electrical network.

Until the dissolution of the principality of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen , the place belonged to its sovereignty , in 1920 Behringen became part of the newly formed district of Arnstadt and a district of the municipality of Niederwillingen .

On the night of April 11-12, 1945, when the US troops arrived, sergeant Alois Wittmann, who fled, was shot dead. Since the white flag was hoisted on the church tower on April 12, the village was not exposed to artillery fire by the advancing Americans.

At the beginning of 1945 the owner of the manor, Baron Vredeber von Ketelhodt , came to Behringen with his family on a trek from his East Prussian estate of Barranowen . After switching to the Soviet occupation, he was arrested in the summer and never seen again. His wife Margarethe with three children was expelled. The property was expropriated without compensation, the valuable library and furniture from the castle disappeared, then it was demolished in 1948. The farm buildings of the 125 hectare estate were preserved. There is also the castle pond and the remains of the manor park.

On July 1, 1950, Behringen was incorporated into Niederwillingen and, together with this, part of the newly formed community of Ilmtal in 1996 . This was incorporated into the city of Stadtilm on July 6, 2018.

In 1958 and 1960 two LPGs were founded , “New Order” and “Unity”.

In 1993 the arched bridge was renovated and the drinking water supply optimized.

In 1800 the Hercules statue was moved from Rudolstadt to Behringen by Carl-Christian Freiherr von Ketelhodt. The statue was restored in 2012 on behalf of the municipality.

Economy and Transport

Behringen is an agricultural village. Today many residents work in Stadtilm or Arnstadt .

A district road leads through the village from Branchewinda to Oberwillingen and a connecting road to the 1047 state road from Arnstadt to Gehren , on which the Behringer tavern is also located. About 500 meters to the west, the A 71 passes Behringen, in the course of which a tunnel is named after the place. The closest departures are Arnstadt-Süd and Ilmenau-Ost .

The next railway station is in Niederwillingen, two kilometers to the east, on the Arnstadt – Saalfeld railway line .

Others

Since 1989 Behringen has been a member of the Behringenverein e. V. , who maintains contact between the various places with the name Behringen and Beringen in Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Belgium.
