geography

Großhettstedt is located in the Ilm valley between Stadtilm in the south and Dienstedt in the north at an altitude of about 330 meters. To the north of the village lies the south-eastern edge of the Thuringian Basin , which slopes steeply down to the Ilm valley. This is where the 445 meter high Hettstedter Berg lies . The Ilm-Saale-Platte begins south of the Ilm and rises to the Großer Kalmberg (547 m). While Großhettstedt is on the north side of the Ilm, the village of Kleinhettstedt is only a little further away on the south side . United Hettstedt is a street village , located on the B 87 lines up.

history

The defining word of the place name points to one of the two Thuringian-Franconian dukes Heden I or Heden II, who ruled in the 2nd half of the 7th and the beginning of the 8th century . Although (Groß-) Hettstedt was first mentioned in 1140, it existed here a castle already in the early Middle Ages, which Wolfgang Timpel from the Museum of Prehistory and Early History of Thuringia was able to prove archaeologically. According to recent research, the place was the center of a ducal, later royal estate complex from Groß- and Kleinhettstedt, the now desert places Osthofen and Barchfeld and "Kinigrorsdorf", today's Klunkermühle. At that time it was on the Ilm crossing a trade route . The paved ford and the Romanesque stone arch bridge south of the village still bear witness to this today .

Until 1920, Großhettstedt belonged to the sovereignty of the Principality or Free State of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt (Amt Stadtilm). Then the state of Thuringia was founded and Großhettstedt was assigned to the Arnstadt district . On July 14, 1961, the community Großhettstedt together with the neighboring community Kleinhettstedt formed the new community Hettstedt , which together with the community Dienstedt formed the new community Dienstedt-Hettstedt on September 27, 1973 , which in turn was incorporated into the community Ilmtal on June 1, 1996 has been. Today Groß- and Kleinhettstedt each form independent districts of the city of Stadtilm.

Economy and Infrastructure

Großhettstedt is an agricultural place. Many residents now find work in companies in the nearby Stadtilm. In the center of the village there is an old four-sided farm with a water mill operated by a mill stream that branches off about 500 m upstream from the Ilm.

Großhettstedt is on the B 87 ( Ilmenau - Weimar ). There is also a district road (K 8) via Kleinhettstedt on to Döllstedt . The Ilm Valley Cycle Path runs south of the village . The next rail connection is in Stadtilm ( Erfurt - Saalfeld route ).
