The Belgrade Marathon ( Serbian Beogradski maraton ) is a marathon in Belgrade that has been running since 1988 and is operated by Belgrade Marathon Ltd. is organized. The program also includes a half marathon and a 5 km run without timing.

history

Elite runner at the Belgrade Marathon 2006

At the first event on May 8, 1988, a distance of 23 km had to be covered. The locals Rifat Zilkić and Radisavka Račić won. The following year the route was 46.7 km. In 1990 the Partizan sports association took over the organization. Since this year, the course has the precisely measured standard length of 42.195 km. The half marathon , which has been part of the program since 1990 , has been officially measured since 2000.

In 1992 the Beogradski maraton doo (Belgrade Marathon Ltd.) was founded, which from now on hosted the race. Since 1995, the prize for the winners has been named after Fred Lebow , who died the year before , the race director of the New York City Marathon, who had advised the organizers since 1990 and who took part in the half marathon in 1993 despite his serious illness.

In 1999, because of the war in Kosovo that had just broken out, the competitions were canceled and a group run for peace was held on the route.

route

The marathon and half marathon start on Bulevar Kralja Aleksandra , in the immediate vicinity of Skupština and Tašmajdan Park. After two kilometers on the Bulevar, the route turns first to the south and then to the west and leads over the Slavija and Nemanjina ulica to the Brankov bridge, on which you cross the Sava after 6 km .

The marathon runners now complete two laps, which lead counterclockwise through the Novi Beograd district . First you pass the Palata Srbije on the left and follow the branch of the Danube , which separates the Great War Island from the Zemun district . At Zemunski Park, turn south and take Ulica Tošin Bunar to Ulica Jurija Gagarina, which you follow west to the starting point of the tour. After 40 km, cross the Brankov Bridge and return to the Stari Grad district , where the destination is on the Terazije .

The half marathon runners run through Novi Beograd on a single shortened lap that separates from the marathon course at Zemunski Park and runs over the Bulevar Mihaila Pupina, the Bulevar umetnosti and the Bulevar Milutina Milankovića and joins the marathon course again shortly before the Brankov Bridge.

Run through history

The Beogradska trka kroz istoriju ( Belgrade Race Through History ) has been organized five times by the organizers of the Belgrade Marathon . This run, in which only invited elite athletes can take part due to the narrow paths, leads over a distance of 5.834 km through the fortress of Belgrade and the surrounding Kalemegdan Park and combines elements of the cross and road run .

Cinematic processing

The Serbian film director Mladen Matičević has produced a documentary entitled Kako postati heroj (German: Fat, lazy and wildly determined - Mladen manages the marathon ) about the efforts made in preparing for and participating in the Belgrade Marathon 2006 . This was also shown on German television.
