List of train stations in Serbia |
The Beograd-Glavna railway station ( Serbian Главна железничка станица Glavna železnička stanica , German Belgrade Central Station ) was an important long-distance station of the Železnice Srbije in Serbia . The station had existed since 1884 and served long-distance and regional traffic as well as shunting operations until June 30, 2018.
After the first construction phase of the new Beograd Centar main station was inaugurated on January 26, 2016, the entire passenger traffic from the old to the new main station was gradually taken over by June 2018. Railway operations in Belgrade main station were discontinued on July 1, 2018. In the future, the station concourse is to be converted into a museum for medieval history. In front of the main entrance, a large bronze sculpture by Stefan Nemanja will be placed on the Savski Trg, which is to be revised there . The Russian sculptor Aleksandar Rukavišnjikov was commissioned by a prominent committee as the winner of the tender for the elaboration of the sculpture. Rukavišnjikov will be assisted by the academy members of the Russian Art Academy in Moscow, Nikolaj Muhin and Nikolaj Šumakov.
location
Belgrade Central Station is located in the Savski Venac district on the banks of the Sava . From the train station, Balkanska ulica leads to Terazije and Nemanjina ulica leads to Slavija . The station can also be reached from Novi Beograd via the Stari Savski Most bridge . At the moment there is also the central bus station at the station.
history
Belgrade Central Station was built between 1881 and 1884 under Prince Milan Obrenović . On August 21, 1884, the railway bridge over the Save was completed, which was supposed to serve the traffic with Zemun and Pest (the Zemun – Savebrücke route was completed on September 15, 1888). On August 23, the station was officially inaugurated with the first train on the Belgrade – Niš line and opened to public transport on September 3. Belgrade was subsequently connected with Niš (1884), Pest (1884), Skopje (1888), Sofia (1888), Istanbul (1888) and Zagreb (1891). The first train from Pest to Istanbul ran on August 12, 1888. The Orient Express first left Paris on October 28, 1888. On January 16, 1916, the Balkan Express replaced the Orient Express, which had been discontinued in 1914. It was introduced for the elite from politics, the military and business and was made up of high-quality sleeping and sitting cars, some of which came from the confiscated inventory of the CIWL . With the defeat of the Central Powers in World War I, the Balkan suit was discontinued and the CIWL introduced the Simplon-Orient-Express in 1920 . Belgrade's main train station remained one of the most important stations for this, as well as for other long-distance connections to Northern and Western Europe introduced after the Second World War, such as the Hellas Express , the Meridian or the Istanbul Express .
From the beginning of the 1970s, a comprehensive reconstruction of Belgrade's railway infrastructure took place in the so-called Belgrade railway junction . The complete replacement of the historic main station was planned. Due to the slow completion of the Belgrade Zentrum station, which was intended as the new central station , the trains were relocated from the old to the new station after decades of parallel operation, most of the traffic in December 2017. After that, the previous main station continued for a few months in a smaller form. During this time it was used in particular for international long-distance traffic, for protocol purposes and for tourism. Ultimately, it is to be converted into a museum. The railway infrastructure of the freight yard was also dismantled. The last freight train left Belgrade Central Station on June 9, 2016 for Rijeka . With that the freight traffic was stopped. The old main station was finally closed on June 30, 2018.
Cultural monument
The building presented at the time of construction of one of the most monumental buildings and symbols of the capital. The building is in the spirit of academicism , representative, molded with structured basis. The middle classical risalit of the main entrance dominates the architectural composition . It is raised by a triangular tympanum .
business
Because of the layout as a terminus station, a locomotive change was necessary for the few trains running through. Electric multiple units were generally used in regional traffic. In addition, there was a loading facility for motor vehicles that was used for motorail trains.

Operational problems
Since the discontinuation of the continuous line connections Ljubljana – Zagreb – Belgrade – Skopje – Thessaloniki ( Olympus-Express ) in 2007 and the connections of the Hellas-Express and Akropolis-Express that were discontinued in the 1990s, Belgrade's main station was last a transfer station for train connections to and from the Turkey, Bulgaria and Macedonia and on the other hand to and from Austria, Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia. Since only a few connecting trains were provided here and long delays were more the rule than the exception, there were disruptions in pan-European long-distance traffic, especially when changing trains. These problems were due to the limited capacity in the old terminal station, the new Beograd Centar station, which was built for end-to-end connections from the former Yugoslavia but only went into operation from 2016 to 2018, as well as the slow double-track expansion and the underdeveloped rail infrastructure at the Belgrade railway junction .
