Reise nach China is a crime film in the crime series Bella Block by director Chris Kraus , who also wrote the screenplay, from 2008. In the lead role , Hannelore Hoger plays the Hamburg chief inspector Bella Block, who is involved in a conflict of jurisdiction after an alleged terrorist attack on a pharmaceutical laboratory the Federal Criminal Police Office.

action

A bomb attack is carried out on a pharmaceutical laboratory; the renowned biologist Josephine Merkur is killed. Bella Block, who is responsible for the laboratory, is amazed at the fact that the BKA arrived at the scene before her. She also notices that the BKA officer Pierre Köbius and the company's head of security have apparently known each other for a long time, as the two of them are on their terms.

For the BKA and the pharmaceutical company, the case is actually clear: Thomas Bärbaum, one of the security guards, who, as it turns out, is a militant opponent of animal experiments, is suspected of the attack. Thus the BKA would be responsible for the case and not the Hamburg homicide commission. But for Bella Block, who, as is often the case, is in a bad mood, the case is not so clear-cut. Her partner Simon Abendroth has traveled to China with his daughter and the BKA keeps getting in the way.

At Josephine Merkur's funeral, at which Bella Block is present, the security guard and alleged assassin Thomas Bärbaum suddenly approaches her and confesses to her that he actually carried out the attack, but in collaboration with the killed biologist. As it turns out, she wanted to initiate police investigations against her employer without having to prosecute him. Because of this statement, Bella Block refrains from arresting Bärbaum, because she hopes he will provide further information that could help resolve the case.

In the course of their investigations, Bella Block realized that the attack must be a very big deal, because in order to be able to remain competitive on the world market, the global company also cooperated with the Chinese, among others. In the further course of the plot it comes to light that not only animal, but also human experiments were carried out with active substances that were not yet approved. It is also becoming increasingly clear to the commissioner that her decision not to take security guard Thomas Bärbaum into police custody was a mistake with grave consequences.

Reviews

TV Spielfilm judged: “Figure drawing, actor performance, direction and camera - everything at its finest. Writer / director Chris Kraus and his team managed one of the best Bella episodes ever. "

Rainer Tittelbach said: “[...] the associative narrative style with its jagged, subjective flashbacks resulted in a strangely nested structure. The actors' play was also strangely beautiful. Actors as if on drugs, aloof, fleeting, depressively playful. You had to surrender to this film - as if in a frenzy ”.
