The Moravian-Silesian Beskydy Mountains ( Moravskoslezské Beskydy in Czech ; Moravsko-sliezske Beskydy in Slovak ) are a mountain range of the West Beskids in the east of the Czech Republic . A small part of the Moravian-Silesian Beskids protrudes into the north of Slovakia .

The Moravian-Silesian Beskids extend about 25 kilometers south of Frýdek-Místek on the border with Slovakia.

To the north, the Moravian-Silesian Beskids merge into the Beskydy Foreland ( Podbeskydská pahorkatina ) and the Ostrava Basin . To the east, the Jablunkau furrow ( Jablunkovská brázda ) through which the Olsa flows separates the mountain range from the Silesian Beskids . In the southeast, the Jablunka Pass forms the border with the Jablunkau Mountains ( Jablunkovské mezihoří ). Towards the south, on the Slovak side, the Turzovská vrchovina mountain range joins, with the ridge forming the state border. On the Makovský průsmyk ( Makov Pass ) the Moravian-Silesian Beskids meet in the southwest with the Javorníky and the Vsetin Mountains . Towards the west, the Rožnovská Bečva and the Rosenauer Depression through which it flows forms the natural border with the Wsetin Mountains. To the northwest is the Moravian Gate .

The mountains on the Czech side cover an area of ​​623 km² and are predominantly forested. It is part of the protected landscape area CHKO Beskydy. Its mean height is 703.3  m .

The highest point is the Lysá hora ( Kahlberg ) with 1325  m nm . Other peaks include a. the Smrk 1276  m , the Travný 1203  m and the Radhošť 1129  m . There is an important sandstone deposit at Godula .

The Moravian-Silesian Beskids are divided into three sub-units, the Klokočovská hornatina, Lysohorská hornatina and Radhošťská hornatina.

The most important cities are Frenštát pod Radhoštěm , Frýdlant nad Ostravicí , Jablunkov , Rožnov pod Radhoštěm , Třinec , Valašské Meziříčí and Zubří .

The main European watershed between the Danube and the Oder runs across the Moravian-Silesian Beskids in the east to the Makov Pass . In the west, the Rožnovská Bečva, part of the catchment area of ​​the Danube, drains . All other rivers, such as the Jičínka , Sedlnice, Lubina , Tichávka , Ondřejnice , Čeladenka, Ostravice , Olešná, Mohelnice, Morávka , Lučina , Stonávka , Ropičanka , Kopytná , Bystrý potok and Lomná lead directly or indirectly to the Oder. The Šance-Řečice and Morávka dams are located in the Moravian-Silesian Beskids .

history

The historical border between Moravia and Silesia ran through the mountains along the Ostravice . In the course of medieval settlement, mostly in the lower valleys, forest hoof villages emerged . Later, especially in the Moravian part and the higher elevations, the clearing of fields and the settlement of individual farms (Paseken) took place. The mountain was used for tourism in the second half of the 19th century. In 1880 a mountain hut was built on the Kahlberg. From 1898 z. B. the mountain association for the Radhošverein built by the architect Dušan Jurkovič in Pustevny mountain huts in the Wallachian style, which are now a national cultural monument . Today the Moravian-Silesian Beskids are also one of the most important winter sports areas in the Czech Republic. One of the winter sports centers in the southern part of the mountain is Gruň .
