action

The orphan Vivian grows up with her aunt Astrid in Bucharest and works in a chocolate shop . Vivian's parents were killed in the Rocky Mountains ten years earlier . Vivian and her aunt belong to a group of werewolves , with whose leader Gabriel Astrid has the son Rafe. Vivian was promised the lead werewolf, a wealthy absinthe producer , as his future partner.

The American comic artist Aiden comes to Bucharest to research local legends. He meets Vivian and falls in love with her. The couple's meetings are watched by Rafe, who reports about it to Gabriel. Gabriel instructs Rafe to drive Aiden out of town or kill him.

Rafe fights the American and tries to kill him, but he is killed by the American with a silver object. Aiden is kidnapped by another werewolf and forced to participate in a ritual in which the werewolves hunt a human who is allowed to live if he crosses a river in the hunting area. Aiden fights the werewolves with a silver knife and reaches the river. Gabriel wants - against the rules - to attack Aiden behind the river, but Vivian fights against her leader.

Gabriel wants to hunt Vivian in a duel. In the end, Gabriel is killed by Vivian. In a conversation about whether Vivian should take over the pack, Aiden says they could just go to Paris. Then they drive together through the Arcul de Triumf .

Reviews

Peter Debruge wrote in Variety magazine on January 29, 2007 that the film adapted the classic werewolf legends - which would be " castrated " in the process - for his needs. The erotic metaphor of the novel is replaced by the feud between humans and werewolves in the “ stupid Underworld style ”. The film is " comparatively lame ". The ending " Hollywood style " is different from the ending in the novel, in which Vivian marries a werewolf.

Lael Loewenstein wrote in the Los Angeles Times of 29 January 2007, the film was " relentlessly stupid " ( " relentlessly silly "). Bruckner's “ wooden ” type of effect causes the viewer to wonder what Aiden finds attractive about her. The critic scoffed that there was not enough absinthe in all of Romania to neutralize the taste left by the portrayal of Martinez.

The Lexicon of International Films says: “ Soft horror film that combines the classic genre with a romance. [...] Solid presentation with considerable actors. "

background

The right to film the novel was acquired by the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer company in 1997. A few directors were then hired - first Larry Williams , who died in 1999. He was followed by Po-Chih Leong , Sanji Senaka , Rupert Wainwright (who decided on a different project) and, finally, in 2005 by Katja von Garnier .

The film was for 25 million dollars in Romania rotated. It grossed about $ 3.5 million in US cinemas.
