Boris Grigoryevich Tewlin ( Russian Бори́с Григо́рьевич Те́влин ; born July 12, 1931 in Saratow ; † July 2, 2012 ) was a Russian musicologist and choir director .

Life

Tewlin studied conducting and choral music at the Moscow Conservatory Music School (graduated with honors in 1952). He then studied choral conducting with WP Muchina and organ with Alexander Fjodorowitsch Goedicke at the Moscow Conservatory (graduated with distinction in 1957). In 1959 he became a lecturer at the Moscow Conservatory. In 1962 he completed his traineeship with Alexander Wassiljewitsch Sveshnikov . In 1993 he was appointed to the chair of the Moscow Conservatory. Since 2011 he has been head of the department for contemporary choral conducting.

As a conductor, Tevlin has been associated with the Choir of Students of Moscow Universities at the Moscow Conservatory since 1953 . In 1960 it became the Moscow Choir of Young People and Students of the All-Russian Choral Society , which Tevlin directed until 1993. Every year the choir took part in the Moscow Autumn Music Festival and performed around 300 pieces a cappella in twelve years . The choir developed an intensive concert activity at home and abroad. He won in 1970 two silver medals at the 18th International Guido d'Arezzo -Chorwettbewerb in Arezzo , in 1972 a gold medal and the Grand Prize at the international competition Tallinn -72 , 1975, a gold medal at the 8th International Choir Competition in Varna , 1981, a gold medal and the Grand Prix at the 28th International Choir Competition in Cork and in 1989 two gold medals and one silver medal at the International Choir Competition in Tolosa .

In 1987 Tewlin founded the Mixed Choir of Conductors of Russia , and in 1994 he directed the Russian-American Choir . In 1994 he also founded the Chamber Choir of the Moscow Conservatory . The choir won the Grand Prix and two gold medals at the International Choir Festival in Riva del Garda , a first prize and a gold medal at the first Brahms Festival in Wernigerode in 1999, a first prize at the 25th International Festival of Orthodox Church Music in Hajnówka in 2003, and he was the winner of the first Choir Olympiad in Linz in 2000. In 2008 the choir received the ECHO Klassik 2008 award for the recording of the choral opera Bojarina Morosowa by RK Schtschedrin .

Tewlin has led master classes in Russia, Bulgaria , Hungary , Yugoslavia , Israel , the People's Republic of China , the USA and France . He was the jury chairman of the all-Russian choir competitions Singing Russia and Moscow , and he was a member of the jury at the choir directing competition in Salawat and at many foreign choir competitions, especially at the Choir Olympics in Seoul in 2002 and in Bremen in 2004 . From 2008 to 2012 he directed the State Academic Russian Sveshnikov Choir . In 2009 the choir received a grant from the Russian President.

Tewlin wrote musicological and journalistic essays, reviews, work portraits and memoirs. In 2001 Valery Stefanovna gave the book to Boris Tewlin. Choir paths out. He became vice-chairman of the All-Russian Music Society in 1978 , a member of the International Academy of Informatization in 1995 , a member of the Union of Composers of Russia in 1998 , an Academy member and Doctor of Philosophy in 2004 , and he was an advisor to the Russian section of the International Society for Music Education .
