Boris Ivanovich Stepanov ( Russian Борис Иванович Степанов ; born April 15 . Jul / 28. April  1913 greg. In St. Petersburg , † 7. December 1987 in Minsk ) was a Russian physicist and university teacher .

Life

After nine years of high school and factory engineering school, Stepanov began studying at Leningrad University in 1930 . In addition, he worked from 1934 in the Leningrad State Institute of Optics (GOI) . In 1935 his first scientific work with the theoretical explanation of the experimentally observed fine structure of the metastable energy levels of nitrogen was published. After graduating in 1936, he completed a three-year aspiration at the GOI, at the end of which he defended his candidate dissertation on anomalies in the spectra of two atomic molecules and their theoretical description. In 1939 he became a member of the CPSU .

After the start of the German-Soviet War , Stepanov went to the front as a volunteer in July 1941 . With the 162nd Partisan Command he fought first in the Leningrad Front and then in the Stalingrad Front .

In January 1943 Stepanov was released from the Red Army and sent to the GOI for scientific work, which was evacuated in Yoshkar-Ola . In 1948 he defended his doctoral thesis on the calculation of the oscillation frequencies of complex organic molecules, whereupon he received his doctorate in physical-mathematical sciences in 1949 . Together with Mikhail Vladimirovich Wolkenstein and Mikhail Alexandrowitsch Jeljaschewitsch , he presented the theory of the spectra of polyatomic molecules in a monograph published in 1949. In 1951 he became head of the laboratory.

In addition to his research activities, Stepanov taught at the Leningrad Institute for Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics (ITMO) as a lecturer at the Chair of Theoretical Physics (until 1951). With others he founded the Faculty of Engineering Physics.

In 1953 Stepanov was appointed to the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic (AN-BSSR, since 1991 Academy and since 1997 National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NANB)) in Minsk. At the same time he became a full member of the AN-BSSR. There he was laboratory manager from 1955 to 1973 and institute director from 1957 to 1985. Based on the work of Sergei Ivanovich Wawilows , Stepanov developed a quantum mechanical theory of luminescence and light absorption . In 1955 it was shown for the first time that a luminescence system with three energy levels can produce excess energy . In 1956, Stepanov predicted negative luminescence. He then developed the theoretical basis so that he could also describe the negative photo effect . In the 1960s he devoted himself to laser physics , nonlinear optics and holography .

In addition, Stepanov was from 1953 professor at the Belarusian Lenin State University . There he headed the chair for spectral analysis until 1967 . His students included Pawel Andrejewitsch Apanassewitsch , Anatol Mikalajewitsch Rubinau , Wiktar Paulawitsch Grybkouski and Aljaxander Sjargejewitsch Rubanau .

From 1964 to 1985 Stepanov was the chief editor of the All-Russian magazine for applied spectroscopy, which is published in Minsk . 1971–1986 he was an elected MP in the Supreme Soviet of the BSSR . From 1985 to 1987 he was a member and then a consultant of the AN-BSSR Presidium.

The NANB's Institute of Physics bears Stepanov's name.
