The nature reserve Brückborn / Kranzbruch (NSG identification ACK-053) is located in the municipality of Monschau between Konzen and Simmerath . It was designated in 1998 with the Monschau landscape plan and consists of two sub-areas which together are around 43.9 hectares in size.

With the exception of the small southeastern sub-area, the nature reserve is located in the significantly larger FFH area DE-5303-302 Kalltal and side valleys , which means that the corresponding area belongs to the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas . In the east, the Simmerather NSG Kranzbach and Kranzbruchvenn connects seamlessly .

Area description

In the nature reserve rises a nameless source inlet of the Kranzbach , which flows further northeast into the Kall . The shallow Bachtal is partially afforested with spruce , but the wet areas are in poor condition. The open land is partly fallow wet and wet grassland areas as well as flat moor and moorland areas.

Flora and fauna

In the nature reserve, leg breakers , rosemary heather , cranberries and lung gentian are found among others . At the edge of a gaps in spruce forest there is a rich variety of orchids ( spotted orchid ). There is also a small fen about 15 m in diameter with scabbard cotton grass and moor lily . According to the responsible forest officials, there is also sundew .

Kingfisher , whinchat , beaver , great mouse-eared bat , pond bat and raised bog mother-of-pearl butterflies are special animal species in the area .

Protection purpose

The area is part of the biotope network between the Venn plateau and the Kall valley. The designation as a nature reserve serves primarily to preserve valuable wetlands as a habitat for several, u. a. according to the red list of endangered plant and animal species in North Rhine-Westphalia .
