Breznica (until 1927 Slovak "Brežnica" or "Veľká Brežnica"; Hungarian Nagyberezsnye - until 1902 Nagybrezsnyice ) is a municipality in the Stropkov district in eastern Slovakia .
The municipality of Breznica is located on the left (eastern) bank of the Ondava and borders directly on the area of the town of Stropkov . The Ondava Valley is around one to two kilometers wide in the Breznicas area and here takes in the Breznička tributary, which is around twelve kilometers long . The surrounding mountains of Ondavská vrchovina (Ondauer Uplands) reach heights of 500 meters above sea level.
Breznica is a neat street village typical of northeast Slovakia, which stretches for almost 1.5 kilometers along trunk road 15 ( Slovak name: I / 15 ), which leads from Svidník to Vranov nad Topľou and as a transit route from southeast Poland to Hungary serves.
Neighboring municipalities of Breznica are Stropkov in the north, Brusnica in the east, Piskorovce in the southeast, Miňovce in the south, Nižná Olšava in the west and Šandal in the northwest.
The place was first mentioned as Wrezniche in 1404, the current spelling has been in effect since 1927. Previously the Slovak name (Veľká) Brežnica , the Magyarized Hungarian name is Nagyberezsnye , until 1888 the name was Nagybresnice , until 1902 Nagybrezsnyice was official. The Catholic Church consecrated to Saint Joseph (Slov. Svätý Jozef ) was built in 1763.
The population consists of almost 99% Slovaks . 87% of the inhabitants stated that their denomination was Roman Catholic , approx. 10% profess to the Greek Catholic Church .
Breznica is the location of a primary school (up to the fourth grade).
