Federal Council election 2018


The two newly elected federal councilors: Viola Amherd and Karin Keller-Sutter

In the 2018 Federal Council election , the United Federal Assembly of Switzerland appointed the successors to the Federal Councilors Johann Schneider-Ammann ( FDP ) and Doris Leuthard ( CVP ) , who were stepping down on December 31, 2018 .

Viola Amherd (CVP) and Karin Keller-Sutter (FDP) were each elected in the first ballot . This was the first time that two women were newly elected to the Swiss government at the same time.

Starting position

Doris Leuthard (CVP, canton Aargau ) was elected to the Federal Council in the replacement election on June 14, 2006 as the successor to Joseph Deiss (CVP, canton Friborg ). Leuthard initially headed the Department of Economic Affairs (EVD), and from 2010 the Department for Environment, Transport, Energy and Communication (DETEC). In 2010 and 2017 she served as Federal President .

Johann Schneider-Ammann (FDP, Canton of Bern ) was elected to the Federal Council in the replacement election on September 22, 2010 as the successor to Hans-Rudolf Merz (FDP, Canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden ). Schneider-Ammann heads the Department of Economic Affairs (EVD). In 2016 he served as Federal President.

Candidates

To succeed Leuthard, Councilor of States Peter Hegglin ( ZG ), Councilor Heidi Z'graggen ( UR ), National Councilor Viola Amherd ( VS ) and National Councilor Elisabeth Schneider-Schneiter ( BL ) have been nominated by their respective cantonal parties . The CVP parliamentary group finally nominated Heidi Z'graggen and Viola Amherd as official candidates on November 16, 2018.

To succeed Schneider-Ammann, Councilor of State Karin Keller-Sutter ( SG ), Councilor Christian Amsler ( SH ) and Councilor of States Hans Wicki ( NW ) were nominated by their respective cantonal parties . On November 16, the FDP parliamentary group finally officially nominated Karin Keller-Sutter and Hans Wicki.
