Carl Abel (philologist)
Carl Kalonymos Abel (born November 25, 1837 in Berlin , † November 26, 1906 in Wiesbaden ) was a German classical philologist , journalist and translator . He was the father of the chemist, educator, journalist, author, translator and publicist Curt Abel and the grandfather of the internationally renowned economist Richard Abel Musgrave .
Life
Carl Abel was born as the son of the banker Gerson Abel (* 1791) in Berlin and attended high school in Frankfurt an der Oder . He studied philology and history at the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin, at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . He completed his studies with the Dr. phil. from. In 1850/1851 he gave lectures at the Berlin University. Then he went on study trips to England, Russia and America. He then lived as a writer and private scholar in Germany, mostly in Berlin. He lectured temporarily at the Berlin Humboldt Academy on various disciplines of linguistics and at Oxford on Indo-European semantics and was employed as a philological assistant in the Foreign Office in Berlin. Carl Abel was a long-standing English Berlin correspondent for The Times and Standard newspapers, as well as an employee of the Prussian Kreuzzeitung newspaper . His publisher Ferdinand Heinicke was also the publisher of the Kreuzzeitung .
Abel wrote two correspondences for the Daily Telegraph in 1860 in which he anonymously attacked Karl Marx and took sides with Carl Vogt . Marx described this in detail in his book Herr Vogt . Marx read the translation "Work of the Imperial Russian Embassy in Beijing on China, its people, its religion, its institutions, its social conditions, etc." and used it in the draft of the third book of Capital and in the first volume of Das Kapital .
Abel wrote his linguistic essays in 1880. As part of the Ilchester lecture series of the Taylor Institute for Russian and Eastern European Studies at Oxford University , named after the fourth Earl of Ilchester , he gave lectures on comparative lexicography in 1883. In 1884 he stayed in Dresden and Pillnitz , where he wrote forewords to his writings.
His attacks on the Egyptologist Adolf Erman were rejected by August Friedrich Pott , among others . Sigmund Freud used his book On the Opposite of Original Words for his theory of dream interpretation.
He lived in Wiesbaden since the summer of 1890 at the latest. There he died on November 26, 1906. Only the Leipziger Illustrierte Zeitung and the Vossische Zeitung published short necrologists about him.
