Château de Rayne Vigneau

The Château de Rayne-Vigneau winery is located in the commune of Bommes , part of the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée Sauternes in the Bordeaux wine-growing region . In the Bordeaux wine classification of 1855 , it was classified as "Premier Cru Classé". The estate has 80 hectares that are exclusively dedicated to viticulture . The vineyards are not far from the wineries of Château Sigalas-Rabaud , Château Rabaud-Promis and Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey .

The Sémillon grape variety makes up the largest share with a planted area of 74 percent. In addition, 24% Sauvignon Blanc is added. The remaining 2% is made up of the Muscadelle grape variety . The average age of the vines is a high 30–35 years. The harvest is carried out by hand in several harvest aisles in order to select the noble rotten berries. After the developing wine has reached an alcohol content of 13-14 percent by volume through alcoholic fermentation in wooden barrels , it is pumped into stainless steel tanks and cooled down to 7 ° C for a few days and stabilized. The wine is aged 12-18 months after the sulfurization barrels that are renewed annually in half. From Grand Vin almost 120,000 bottles are filled annually. The second wine of the estate is called Madame de Rayne.

history

The history of the estate can be traced back to the late 17th century when the winery belonged to Gabriel de Vigneau. In 1681 his son Étienne took over the fortunes of the estate. He married Jeanne Sauvage, daughter of the owner of Château d'Yquem. After that, the history of the property is lost for a few decades. It is known that the Duffour family of wine merchants owned the estate from 1742 at the latest. After Jean Duffour's death in 1750, his widow Jeanne Tuffereau managed the property until 1774. Her son took over the estate, but died in the summer of 1775, so that his brother Bruno Duffour managed it until 1817. After his death, four nephews inherited Château de Rayne-Vigneau. In 1834, Catherine de Rayne bought the winery. Their marriage remained childless, so that their property passed to her brother Viscount Gabriel de Pontac. He renamed the winery to Vigneau-Pontac, but his nephew Albert de Pontac changed the name to Château Rayne-Vigneau in 1892. After Albert's death on August 19, 1922, his son-in-law Gabriel Vicomte de Roton and his wife Alexandrine de Pontac directed the fortunes of Rayne-Vigneau. Their son Francois Vicomte de Roton still owns the building.

Georges Raoux bought the vineyards in 1961. Since sweet wines from this region did not sell well in the 1960s, Raoux had to part with the winery ten years later; the price was three million francs. The Mestrezat-Preller family of wine merchants, also owners of the red wine estate Château Grand-Puy-Ducasse , owned the estate for several decades, but sold the estate to the Crédit Agricole bank in 2004 .
