At the age of 15 Chihuly lost his older brother George, who died as a US Navy pilot in 1957 during a flight exercise. Nine months later, his father, who was a butcher and union leader , died of a heart attack at the age of 51. Chihuly's mother Viola Magnuson then took a job to support herself and her son. She died in 2006 at the age of 98.
While in England in 1976, Dale Chihuly was in a serious car accident on a rainy night. He was thrown through the windshield and seriously cut his face. He went blind in his left eye. After the accident, his face was stitched with 256 stitches and several plastic surgeries were necessary to restore his appearance. He has been wearing an eye patch ever since. After recovering, he continued his work as a glass blower.
After he dislocated his shoulder while doing bodysurfing in 1979 , he hired glassblowers because he was unable to do anything himself for several months. Chihuly commented on this in an interview in 2006 and explained that he later enjoyed watching it more than producing it himself, because he can take multiple perspectives on the workpiece, recognize and eliminate errors more quickly.
From 1988 to 1991 Chihuly was married to the playwright Sylvia Peto . She ended the marriage at a party the couple were invited to together with the words:
"Pat, you are aware that your wife hates you, aren't you? If not, everyone else in this room knows it. "
In 2005 he married Leslie Jackson Chihuly , with whom he has a son.

Another trip was to Waterford , Ireland (known for Waterford Crystal) to work in the glass factory and then to install glasswork in and around Lismore Castle . This was followed by a trip to Monterrey , Mexico to the VitroCrisa factory .
The various series result from these work stays and the collaboration with different glass artists from different regions. The most important glass series by Chihuly include: Baskets , Persians , Seaforms , Macchia , Ikebana , Cylinders , Soft Cylinders , Venetians , Putti , Fiori , Niijima Floats and the Black Series .
