Anna Chlumsky (born December 3, 1980 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American actress . She became known for the role of Vada Sultenfuss in the cult film My Girl - My First Love (1991).

Life

Chlumsky was already in front of the camera for commercials as a toddler. In 1989 she played a small role in the movie Alone With Uncle Buck and started her acting career. She played her first leading role in the youth film My Girl (1991) alongside Macaulay Culkin , Dan Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis . The film became an international box office success. Chlumsky received an MTV Movie Award , among other things . The success of the film made her a sought-after child star . However, she turned down a television series that was supposed to be tailored to her, as did roles in A Dog Named Beethoven and Lassie .

In 1994 she appeared in the My Girl - Continued My great love - My Girl 2 again before the camera and played a starring role in the comedy Mommy Market - Looking for the dream mother . In 1995 she starred alongside Christina Ricci in the movie Gold Diggers: The Secret of Bear Mountain . In 1993 she auditioned for the role of Lex in Jurassic Park , but was left behind against Ariana Richards .

Because Chlumsky no longer received any interesting offers, she distanced herself from the acting profession in the late 1990s. She studied International Relations at the University of Chicago and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 2002 . From then on she worked as a restaurant critic for a few years . Eventually she decided to return to acting and attended the Atlantic Acting School in Manhattan.

In 2005 she appeared again in front of the camera for the short film Wait . In the following years she was mainly seen as a guest actress in the series Law & Order and 30 Rock (both 2007).

In 2009 she starred alongside James Gandolfini in the political satire Cabinet Out of Control . In addition, Chlumsky was repeatedly on the theater stage, including 2005 in the play Balm in Gilead at the "American Theater of Actors" in New York and 2012 in 3C at the "Rattlestick Playwrights Theater" in New York.

In 2011 she played a guest role in two episodes of the series White Collar alongside Matt Bomer . From 2012 to 2019 she played a permanent role in the series Veep - The Vice President with Julia Louis-Dreyfus . For her performance, she was nominated six times for the Emmy television award in the category “Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series” and in 2018 received a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of the ensemble .

In 2018 she was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.

Personal

Anna Chlumsky's mother Nancy played roles in the films My Girl and Mommy Market . She was also her coach and manager. Her father Frank Chlumsky owns his own restaurant.

On March 8, 2008, she married her long-time partner Shaun So. The couple have two daughters: Penelope Joan (* 2013) and Clara Elizabeth (* 2016).
