family

Claudius Franz was born in Mannheim on February 12, 1767, the son of the then court comedian Claude Étienne Le Bauld de Nans and his wife Susanne de la Haye. In 1775 the family moved to Berlin . He got his first job as an engineer officer in the Silesian Schweidnitz and married on October 30, 1792 in the nearby Roth cherry village Ernestine Beate von Sommerfeld and Falckenhayn (born December 31, 1764). In July 1804 she inherited a share of the Roth Kirschdorf manor, later acquired the others from her two sisters and died on January 9, 1816 at Roth Kirschdorf Castle. The marriage resulted in two sons: Claudius Reinhold Theodor, born in Strasburg (West Prussia) on June 29, 1798, died on May 17, 1799 in Roth Kirschdorf. Heinrich Ludwig Claudius was born on November 29, 1793 in Roth Kirschdorf, took over the manor from his father and was Rittmeister in the 7th Silesian Landwehr Regiment . He sold his estate in 1841 and died unmarried in Schweidnitz on December 13, 1843. The mother and her two sons were buried in the cemetery in Würben . Claudius Franz Le Bauld de Nans was last stationed in Breslau, lived there at Gartenstrasse 2, where he died on February 12, 1844 and was buried in the military cemetery near the Ohlauer Stadtgraben.

Military career

Le Bauld received his training at the Potsdam Engineering Academy ( Ecole de Génie et d'Architecture ) founded in 1788 and was transferred to the Schweidnitz Fortress in mid-1790, where he remained stationed until the beginning of 1806. During this time he took part in various engineering commands. In September 1791 he traveled to what was then the Duchy of Courland on a secret mission to check the defenses against a Polish attack. Between 1796 and 1799 he was involved in the recording of the territories that fell to Prussia after the Third Partition of Poland . At the end of 1793, parts of the Prussian engineering corps were mobilized because of the uprisings that had broken out in Poland . Le Bauld fought alongside the Old Prussian Infantry Regiment No. 11 and received the medal on November 8, 1794 for his support in the capture of a Polish corps on November 1, 1794 near Pianki (7 km west of Nowogród, ( position )) Pour le Mérite . Around February 1806 he was transferred from Schweidnitz as the second engineer officer to Cosel in Upper Silesia in order to accelerate the expansion of Fort Friedrich Wilhelm. Between February and July 1807 he took part there in the course of the Fourth Coalition War in the successful defense of the fortress against French and Bavarian troops.

In 1810, Le Bauld was accepted into the New Prussian engineering corps as a field engineer for the Cosel Fortress and in 1813 he was involved in the re-fortification of Brieg . In the 1813/14 campaign he was part of the General Staff of the 2nd Prussian Army Corps under General v. Kleist and in February 1814 he was a field engineer for the small French town of Vitry-le-François . For his services there and for the occupation of the Verdun Fortress , he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class. In the spring of 1815 he briefly led the expansion of some gun batteries below the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress and was in the course of the further campaign of 1815 commander of the engineering and pioneer troops in the 4th Prussian Army Corps.

In 1815, Le Bauld was appointed brigadier of the 2nd Rhenish fortress district of the 3rd engineering brigade based in Mainz and was thus responsible for the construction and expansion of the fortifications in Koblenz , Luxembourg , Mainz and Saarlouis . During this time he was significantly involved in the planning of the Koblenz fortress. In the spring of 1816 he prepared a detailed project for Major General Aster about the fortifications on the left and right banks of the Rhine in Koblenz. This also included a design for the contregard system of the Ehrenbreitstein fortress . According to the foundation plans drawn up by him on June 2, 1817, the fortresses Alexander , Franz and parts of the Oberehrenbreitstein were later built. As a result of a negotiation that took place in the summer of 1816 between Emperor Franz I of Austria, King Friedrich Wilhelm III. by Prussia and Grand Duke Ludwig I of Hesse-Darmstadt on matters relating to the Mainz fortress , Le Bauld was appointed to represent Prussian interests. In 1818 he was awarded the Grand Ducal Hessian Order of House and Merit , knight 1st class for his collaboration in the agreement that was later negotiated .

In November 1817, Le Bauld received his transfer as brigadier of the Prussian-Saxon fortress district of the 2nd engineer brigade based in Torgau and was thus responsible for the fortifications in Erfurt , Magdeburg , Torgau and Wittenberg . According to his plans, the Torgau fortress in particular was significantly reinforced.

In November 1825 he was promoted to inspector of the 2nd engineer inspection based in Wroclaw. All fortifications in the province of Saxony, Silesia , Stralsund and Stettin were subordinate to him .
