Corinto is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cauca in Colombia .

geography

Corinto is located in the Provincia del Norte in Cauca at an altitude of 1050 to 4000 m above sea level. NN , 118 km from Popayán on the western side of the Central Cordillera of the Colombian Andes . Corinto is traversed by the Guengüe , Huasanó , Jagual , Negro and Paila rivers. The municipality borders on Miranda to the north, Toribío and Caloto to the south, Planadas in the Tolima department to the east and Padilla to the west .

The municipality of Corinto has 33,489 inhabitants, of which 13,384 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

A finca already existed in the area of today's Corinto during colonial times . This was bought in the middle of the 19th century by two brothers who drove the construction of a village around the finca. Corinto was officially founded in 1867 and received the status of a municipality in 1868.

economy

Corinto's main industries are agriculture and animal husbandry . In particular, sugar cane and coffee are grown.
