Bestien is a German television film by Christian Görlitz from 2010. It is the 19th film in the ZDF crime film series Das Duo .

action

The Holstein Junker Heinrich von Laatzen finds his former forest manager Werner Schumacher dead in the forest of his estate. When he called the police, Schumacher's friend Tim Stein suddenly knocked him down with an iron bar. After Inspector Ahrens arrives, Heinrich von Laatzen lies behind the wheel of his lost car. Allegedly he had an accident, which the inspector finds difficult to believe.

Werner Schumacher has been dead for ten weeks after starving himself to death. On the high seat where he was found, the forensics department discovered Schumacher's diary. Here he had meticulously written down every thought and feeling during his passing.

Ahrens and Hertz question Schumacher's ex-wife, who is very relieved about his death. Schumacher had recently harassed and persecuted her constantly. The talented violin player confesses to the inspectors that she had a relationship with Heinrich von Laatzen, who gave her great performances. Thus, the circumstances of death chosen by Schumacher can be explained by the fact that he could not forgive von Laatzen for having taken his wife away from him and that he was still "groaning" for her. After Viktor Ahrens looks at the diary and the entries in it, he comes across a kind of confession. As it turns out, Schumacher caused the death of a person. The search for a missing person in the last few months leads to Thea Haiden, a twenty-nine year old young woman from Lübeck. Using the notes in the diary, the body is then found in a barrel in the shipyard, which is also owned by Laatzen.

Unexpectedly, Tim Stein, an alleged friend of Werner Schumacher, reports to the police station and accused von Laatzen of having killed Schumacher. Together with Freya Schumacher, “they killed him with their souls. Not with your hands. ”They are bad people. In the course of his testimony, he admits that this is why he hit von Laatzen. However, the man puzzles the inspectors. He is psychologically abnormal and behaves relatively childish. Again and again he emphasizes to be strong and not a loser. He would have put Schumacher up after his wife cheated on him and he lost his job with von Laatzen. Hertz suspects, however, that Stein had used Schumacher only to have power over him and to manipulate him. She lures him out of his reserve and notices that he suddenly becomes suspicious and stops his excessive need for communication. She secretly follows him onto a ship that he is waiting in the port as part of his caretaker job. When Stein notices her, he locks her up in a cabin and threatens to shoot himself when Inspector Ahrens arrives. After the situation eased again, Stein was arrested and interrogated. He states that he “only” wanted to help Schumacher to get revenge on his former boss Laatzen and his wife. In order to get it "flawless", they had lured Thea Haiden to them and wanted to practice the whole thing beforehand. It then got out of hand and the young woman was killed while trying to punish her with a rope around her neck. Commissioner Ahrens is convinced that Stein was the sole culprit because Schumacher was far too unstable for such an act. Besides, there was nothing about it in his diary. After Hertz Tim Stein speaks urgently to his conscience, he admits the deed and she has to recognize how unrequited love can turn people into beasts.

criticism

Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv said: “Why do people murder? this film seems to be asking. Because they are bad? Is it because fate determines it that way? Because a cold world wants it that way? Thematic reference film: 'Tatort - Because they are evil'. Only the dark crime drama by Christian Görlitz lacks that magical pull. ”So“ this film doesn't necessarily cast a spell on the viewer. The film does not develop a magical tension like the 'Tatort' with Matthias Schweighöfer, it works rather as a puzzle. And the viewer needs patience. "

In Quotenmeter.de Julian Miller evaluated: "Without a doubt we can say that this is the structural design of this episode to a sophisticated with lots of finesse structure. In the first few minutes everything seems to make little sense and the viewer is left alone with some incoherent impressions. But with the end of the first act, the threads slowly come together and the background to the machinations of the von Laatzen clan comes more and more to light. The plantings are always placed very subtly and the revelations almost always come at the right time. "

The critics of the TV magazine TV Spielfilm gave it a medium rating (thumbs to the side) and said “The crammed plot lacks any credibility - after all, the port of Lübeck looks pretty scary.” Their overall conclusion was “Good looks, but incredibly bumpy”.
