The light on the gallows is a German literary film adaptation of DEFA by Helmut Nitzschke from 1976. It was based on the story of the same name by Anna Seghers .
action
In 1793 the three French Debuisson, Sasportas and Galloudec are sent to the English-ruled island of Jamaica . On behalf of the French government, they are supposed to spark an uprising among the English slaves. The three reached Jamaica in 1799, and Debuisson was welcomed with open arms on the island. He grew up here; his grandfather ran a rum factory which, according to the current manager, Bering, will now be passed on to his grandson.
Debuisson, Sasportas and Galloudec begin to make contact with black people. You can get the blacksmith Bedford to act as an intermediary between you and the leader of the small insurgent group Cuffee. While Sasportas is planning the uprising of the black slaves with increasing commitment, Debuisson soon enjoys the role of the rum factory heir.
When the revolution in France is ended by Napoléon Bonaparte , he wants to postpone the black uprising and also prevent a meeting between Sasportas and Bedford, at which the further course of action should be discussed. Sasportas, however, refuses allegiance to Debuisson. A little later Bedford kills an overseer and sets a fire on a neighboring farm, which soon spreads and can only be defeated with difficulty. After a long escape, during which he is supported by Galloudec and Cuffee, among others, Bedford is captured. Sasportas disappears. When British investigators appear at Debuisson a few days later, Sasportas reveals to the investigators. Sasportas appears, refuses to give the names of his accomplices and is executed a short time later. Galloudec and Cuffee manage to escape to Haiti , where the blacks have already declared a republic.
production
The light on the gallows was filmed in 1975 in Cuba and Bulgaria . The film premiered on May 13, 1976 in the Berlin cosmos. Although Anna Seghers, who wrote the story on which the film was based, was happy with the filming, it was a flop. After the premiere, changes were made to the film, but The Light on the Gallows was removed from the schedule after a short time. The film was first shown on television on November 27, 1977 on DFF 2 and was released on DVD in October 2006.

criticism
The contemporary criticism found that tension rarely arises in the film and that scenes and dialogues often come across as quoted. "A lot is told, but little in a sensual context."
For the lexicon of international film , Das Licht auf dem Galgen was “[less] an exotic adventure film than the depiction of human and social conditions and developments; artistically not entirely satisfactory. "
