action

Convicted police murderer Carl Lucas aka Frankenstein is the best driver in the brutal prison car race, also known as the Death Race , which is lucratively marketed by an Internet pay-TV broadcaster . The prize for him and his pit crew is release from prison - he is only one victory away from this goal. However, the former promoter, RH Weyland, had to sell the rights to the "Death Races" due to a hostile takeover by Niles York, an English billionaire. York, an operator of private detention centers, wants to organize the "Death Race" as a transcontinental race through the South African desert. Weyland had previously arranged for Lucas to undergo facial surgery to restore his scarred face after a devastating accident. However, since this operation he has had to wear a mask in order not to endanger the merchandising income as "Frankenstein". His team, which consists of the technicians Goldberg and Lists and the navigator Katrina, know nothing of his survival. Lucas only needs one victory to win freedom for himself and his team. York makes new rules and does not want to know anything about a pardon after the last victory. He also threatens to kill Lucas if he wins.

The team is taken to a prison tunnel in the Kalahari Desert. There everyone gets involved in a fight with other drivers. Lucas loses his mask in the process, and the team realizes that Lucas did not die after all, as previously assumed. In order not to endanger the success, he continues to wear his mask afterwards. Katrina refuses to reconcile with Frankenstein.

Before the first race, the female navigators have to take part and fight each other in a "Death Race Navigator Wars" hosted by the show's producer, Satana. The ten survivors are allowed to participate in the race as navigators, including Katrina, Lucas' navigator. Before the first race, all drivers receive an implant through which they can not only be tracked down anywhere, but also killed at any time if someone should flee.

During the first race, eleven drivers start, but Jackal is disqualified due to an early start and immediately killed. The drivers Joker , Pretty Boy and Tazmanian Devil also die in the first third due to maneuvers by the other drivers. In addition, on certain sections of the route, so-called "markers" enable the weapons installed in the vehicles. Razor wins the race against Frankenstein by a hair's breadth.

A dispute results in a fight in which Goldberg is injured. When he is taken care of, a relationship with the show's doctor develops. To make Katrina jealous, Satana orders the navigator Amber to seduce Lucas; However, this does not deal with it initially. He is then watched with suspicion by Satana and York, as he has apparently lost his previous rebellious demeanor. Lucas then tells his team about the York deal and the loss claim and says there is a "new deal".

The second race begins with the death of three more drivers. Fury dies in an attack by Olga , the first female driver in the Death Race . Seconds later, she is killed by Razor herself . Then the route leads through a township , and Razor has to fight against Lucas and Psycho . Nero's car is destroyed by 14K , Nero himself and his navigator die from an angry mob of residents. Then Lucas drives to a warlord's camp and shoots at it. The warriors follow Lucas to the prison camp and shoot at his vehicle. At the camp, Lucas 'mechanic Goldberg gets caught in an explosion caused by a stray bullet and is believed to be dead. The race ends with Lucas' victory.

A little later York reminds Lucas again that he will retire in the next race due to engine problems and lose to 14K . Then Satana discovers that York plans to swap her as producer so he has full control of Death Race . Before the next race, Katrina admits that she still loves Lucas, and Lucas assures her that he didn't sleep with Amber when he had the opportunity.

The final race begins with Razor destroying Psycho's car. While Psycho dies in the flames, Amber is able to leave the car unharmed. Lucas takes the lead, and York tries to shoot him down with a guided missile. However, this is deflected by a flare that fires 14K . Shortly before the end of the race, Lucas has a huge lead and swears over the radio that he will also kill York. He lets 14K go first in victory and in York. When York tries to flee, Satana handcuffs him to a table. Lucas drives his car into the broadcasting center, where his car explodes and the room is set on fire. At first it looks as if only Lucas survived, because Satana tells the press that Katrina and Niles York died, while "Frankenstein" survived and is on his way to Terminal Island. A doctor confirms that the body, which was burned beyond recognition, belongs to "Frankenstein", as it could be clearly identified by the implant. The doctor called because "Frankenstein" had woken up. The seriously injured man claims to be York. Lists is fetched, which also confirms that it is "Frankenstein".

In a flashback it is made clear that everything was planned by Lucas from the beginning. Lucas managed to get out of the car unharmed with Katrina before the accident, while York was badly burned. A nurse then implanted the transmitter in the unconscious York, which identified him as "Frankenstein". Afterwards, with the help of Satana, the team was able to flee the camp.

Then it becomes clear that the "new arrangement" Lucas was talking about was a deal with Weyland. This was accompanied by the pretense of Goldberg's death, which the doctor had incorrectly confirmed, as well as the deaths of York and Katrina or Lucas as the only survivors. After York is officially dead, Weyland can take over the leadership of the "Death Race" again. He releases Lucas, Katrina, Lists and Goldberg, only Lists of whom decides to return to Terminal Island to testify as a witness. Weyland pays Lucas a large sum for his help, whereupon he and Katrina disappear with Goldberg. York gets a face mask and has to race as "Frankenstein".

criticism

“The success proved director Paul WS Anderson right and so it came about that further sequels were produced for the DVD / Blu-ray market. "Death Race 3: Inferno" is the name of the latest, thoroughly solid entry. If you have fun with the series, you will get more with Roel Reiné's home theater sequel - only this time even more trashy! "

"A real action blast that revives the old recipe."

"Switch off your brain, open your beer: the gross testosterone spectacle"
