Debil is the first studio album by the German punk rock band Die Ärzte , released in 1984. On 21 October 2005 the album was titled Devil re-released after 2004, the indexing of the album was released.

background

According to published yet in Berlin label Vielklang EP Us'm fine ... took CBS Records , the Berlin punk band under contract. The resulting album was recorded in just 13 days, produced by Doctors and Stan Regal. Paul was released as the first single without making it into the single charts. Despite numerous accompanying reports in the youth magazine Bravo, the album was only a respectable success. However, through numerous live performances and tours, the band was gradually able to gain a fan base.

indexing

Debil was in the trade for three years before it was put on the list of writings harmful to young people ( indexing ) in 1987 by the Federal Testing Office for Writings Harmful to Young People (BPjS, today: BPjM) because of the songs Claudia hat 'nen Schäferhund and Lullaby . The indexing was preceded in early 1987 by the indexing of the later album Die Ärzte because of the song Geschwisterliebe contained therein , whereupon earlier releases of the band were also checked for content that was harmful to minors. The reason given for the indexing of Debil was that the two offending titles would have a “socio-ethical disorientation”. The songs would have a "brutal effect" and release the listener "in a state of tense, latent aggressiveness". Claudia has a German shepherd would also point to "deviant forms of sexual satisfaction". The text is about a girl named Claudia who gets her sexual satisfaction through intercourse with a German shepherd . The BPjS further justifies: "Although the last stanza refers to the danger of resinification , the overall impression is conveyed that sexual contact with a German shepherd far exceeds heterosexual satisfaction." The lullaby, on the other hand, would represent violence "in itself." The album was therefore only allowed to be given to adults and was prohibited from advertising. The two offending songs were later published on the mini album Ab 18 .

After the indexing was lifted on November 30, 2004, because the BPjM retrospectively attested the songs a "satirical form" and re-rated the album against the background of today's media experiences of young people, the album Debil can be purchased again without restriction.

Songs

On the LP and MC releases of the album, both sides of the album are titled as "boys" and "girls side" respectively. Even before the first song, the sentence "Hey, you fool, you put on the wrong side!" Can be heard on both sides. The CD publications contain neither the sentence nor the gender-specific assignment of the pages.

The title Doctors Theme is quoted several times in the film Richy Guitar . The film version is u. a. on the re-release Devil .

Claudia hat 'nen shepherd dog was continued with the songs Claudia II (here sexual intercourse with horses is discussed) from the mini album from 18 and Claudia III (this time the partner is a man) from the live album Nach uns die Sintflut . With Claudia (part 95) from her comeback album Die Bestie in Menschengestalt , whose only line of text is “Claudia… is dead” and the sample is “Yes, he died”, the subject ended.

The new release under the name Devil was released on October 21, 2005 by Sony Music Entertainment . It contains a 24-page booklet as well as previously unreleased bonus tracks and a CD-ROM part with two video clips . The detailed liner notes come from the journalist Ingo Neumayer, who also wrote the press release.

  2. Lullaby - Video (unplugged 2002) (Vacation / Vacation; edited by Rod)

Three of the bonus tracks come from the soundtrack for the film Richy Guitar . Claudia has a shepherd dog is represented here in its original version, which was first published in 1983 on the Unikum No. 2 tape sampler . The song Feet from the Table was recorded in 1983 by Farin and Bela under the pseudonym "Die Ulkigen Pulkigen" as part of the recordings for the sampler Plague of the Jungle , but was officially unreleased. However, it had already appeared on a bootleg in the Doctor Games series. It came into circulation because Farin Urlaub had copied some tapes for close friends. CD-ROM part was a live video of the song Teddy Bear July 17 in 1983 Hasenheide, Berlin processed and a video of lullaby in a Unplugged published version of 2002 on the CD. The latter comes from the session for Rock 'n' Roll Realschule , but could not appear on the CD or DVD version of the album due to the indexing that still existed at the time.

success

In contrast to the first publication, the new release was able to place itself on number 5 in the German charts. The album reached the top 100 in Austria and Switzerland. On the occasion of this re-release, Marcus Schleutermann praised rock hard titles such as Paul and Too late as "classics that still belong to every concert today". He also summarized the album as a "charmingly amateurish mixture of punk, wave and new German wave".
