Dean's Church Our Lady Meiningen

The Meiningen deanery is one of 7 deaneries in the Roman Catholic diocese of Erfurt .

The deanery is located in the south and west of Thuringia on the state borders with Bavaria and Hesse , which essentially comprises the districts of Wartburgkreis , Gotha , Schmalkalden-Meiningen , Hildburghausen and Sonneberg as well as the independent cities of Eisenach and Suhl . A large part of the Thuringian Rhön with the dean's office Geisa , which belongs to the diocese of Fulda, is an exception . The Deanery Meiningen was founded in 1949 and is located at Mauergasse 22 in Meiningen .

history

From 1007 to 1994, large parts of what is now southern Thuringia belonged to the diocese of Würzburg , which until 1920 corresponds to the state territory of the duchy and free state of Saxony-Meiningen . After Saxony-Meiningen was absorbed into the newly founded state of Thuringia , the Würzburg Episcopal Commissariat Meiningen was set up. In view of the division of Germany, Bishop Julius Döpfner founded the dean's offices in Meiningen and Saalfeld in 1949 so as not to lose ties with the Würzburg parishes in Thuringia. From 1958, bishops were no longer allowed to enter the GDR , so that in 1959 Bishop Josef Stangl appointed the two Thuringian deaneries as vicariate general . Vicar General became Dean Joseph Schönauer, who was Episcopal Commissioner from 1967. With the help of the Diocese of Würzburg, a new parish church was built in Meiningen from 1967 to 1972.

In 1973 the Vatican formed the Episcopal Office of Erfurt-Meiningen from the Thuringian areas of the dioceses of Fulda and Würzburg . The Vicar General Hugo Aufderbeck from Erfurt was apostolic administrator , and Auxiliary Bishop Karl Ebert (1973/74) and Dieter Hömer (1975–1990) were at his side for the Meiningen areas . The Meiningen dean's office finally joined the newly founded diocese of Erfurt in 1994 .

Structural reforms in the diocese of Erfurt

In 2005 the number of deaneries was reduced from 14 to 7 through a reorganization of the diocese. Furthermore, in 2008 the parish of St. Kilian in Bad Liebenstein became a subsidiary of the parish of St. Andreas in Bad Salzungen and the parish of St. Subsidiary parish assigned to the parish of St. Bonifatius in Gotha. With a structural reform that began in 2012, there will be only 33 parishes in the 7 deaneries by amalgamation in 2020. The parish Friedrichroda was assigned to the parish Gotha in 2012. In the dean's office in Meiningen, the 4 parishes of Eisenach, Gotha, Meiningen and Sonneberg are created from what were once 9 parishes.
